If you fail Math 151.. but..

edited January 2009 in General
Take 150 the next semester? How does that work? Does it over ride your math 151 mark when you're done.. or does that stay as an F, the reason I ask is because I want to know what would happen if i chose to take 150 over 151, to better my mark..

You can't choose to do 150 over 151. 150 is PREcalculus.

150 is calculus 1 with review.

It won't over write your mark for 151, you just satisfy the pre requisite which bother offer (if they do offer the same one in some cases).

So you still keep your D or F.

so then its better off if i ask the advisor to let me repeat it, than take a class and have a fail..

is it true you cant grad from SFU if you got an F in a course??

i heard that today from some dude.

...I don't think you need to ask an advisor to re-take a course, could be wrong, but I doubt it.

You can get an F in a course and graduate, as long as its not required, and if it is required you re-take it

Which raises an interesting hypothetical: What if you fail a required course, and you already used up your 5 repeats...what do you do then?

You can graduate with as many F's on your transcript as long as you satisfy the minimum requirements of each faculty you are graduating from (ie. minimum gpa and course requirements). Take a look at the course planners for that.

I would recommend taking Math 154 which is an easier version of Math 151, and I've heard cases of the faculty allowing you to use the 154 mark to replace 151 but you have to fill out an application for that, it doesn't happen automatically.

@randomuser...once you've used up your 5 repeats I think they start to take the average...that's what I've heard anyways

I would start to cry because no one wants to see a grown man cry.

well if you can replace 151 with 154, then there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to replace 150 with 151, considering it covers literally the exact same content with the exact same book?

Youre now asking about something that is subjectively decided...I'd go talk to the appropriate staff member and see...maybe they do sometimes and maybe not sometimes...

hmm, well thanks for the help, i'm going to try and figure all this out.

150 does not cover the same material as 151.

My friend took both 150 and 151 and his failing mark was cancelled out.

Despite what JayDub says, they are very similar (I wish I had known about 150 in my first semester as it would've probably saved me a lot of trouble (and let me sleep in on fridays...)

I would definitely double-check on being able to replace with 154/157, and there could possibly be a higher mark requirement if you go this way.

In math 150 you learn how to graph.

In math 151 you learn how to do derivatives.

A number of faculties do allow the combo of 154/155 to stand in for 151/152 but sometimes require B grades in both 154 and 155 in that case.

Math 150 only has Graphs in the beginning - which is a review (hence: Calc 1 with Review) after Ch 1, it is basically 151...

Math 150 - 4 credits because of this, and offered 4 times a week.

    Math 151 - 3 credits, 3 times a week.

Look at the outline if you don't believe me.

Either way I spoke to my advisor and she switched me from 150 to 151.

Math 100 = Pre-calc. He would be right if he was thinking of math 100 fo' sho'.
