You usually need a C- for it to count towards anything... I hated that course too!

It is that time of the year again. The time where people get their grades back and found out they are in a world of shi*.

Yes, you will get that 3 credits with your D.
im not sure if the upper level courses require me to have a certain grade in it or just to pass? do u guys know if theres a site/link that outlines this.. not just for this class in particular but in general if you need certain grades in certain prereq classes

    thx
However, I believe you usually need a C- or better to get the Pre-Req for the course. In all honesty, if you are thinking about a Political Science Major and you get a D for the POL 100: Introduction to Political Science, you are probably going to get butchered in upper level courses...

I would rethink about a Political Science Major if I were you.

For the record, I hate POL 100 as well. The Prof (McBride) is ok but my TA is a total asshole who hates me for no apparent reason.

A 'D' is as good as an 'F' cause it doesn't do shit. It won't count for anything. The only thing it's good for is that it won't drag your grade down as much if you decide not to retake it cause a D is worth 1.00 GPA while a F is worth nothing.

POL100 was easy BTW, exams were multiple choice questions STRAIGHT FROM THE BOOK and 2-3 short answers ALSO STRAIGHT FROM THE BOOK. Along with one essay. Unless of course you got a bad instructor that didn't test you STRAIGHT FROM THE BOOK.

HIST101 however is complete shit (unless you're good at writing essays cause the whole course is writing essays, the exam was a long essay too). Don't bother taking that course (unless you're good at writing essays but the course is boring as hell anyways).

POL 100 or 101 is a pre-req for several upper division and 200 level political science classes.

Since it won't count towards pre-reqs I recommend you re-take this course, or change majors. Might want to double check with your advisor though.

Also, no idea how you failed POL100 unless you skipped every class and didnt do any of the readings...

Yes, it counts for 3 credits. However, it will not be counted as a Pre-Req or fulfilling the Political Science program requirement.

I know some Academic Advisor will say this, so I wouldn't feel bad saying this. What the hell are you doing in Political Science!?

In the word of the (sarcasm) all wise IVT: LULZ FAIL!

If you had personal things to take care of then you probably should've just dropped out of the term.

Exactly what it says, a D is considered a Pass but your POL gpa and your cgpa need to be above 2.0 otherwise they give you the boot.

i emailed the poli sci advisor to ask if i need to retake them and she gave me this answer... wtf does it mean

"A D is a pass, but you need to keep your POL gpa and your cumulative gpa above 2.00 to be in the major."
If your CGPA stays below 2.00, you'll be forced into Academic Probation. If your CGPA is still below 2.00 after a semester (or until summer, not sure), you'll be forced to withdraw from SFU / kicked out.

so i dont need to retake pol100 right
  • edited December 2008
If you need the class as a pre-req or a grad requirement then yes you have to redo it because it won't be accepted.

And honestly, yes you should redo a D.
  • edited December 2008
i should? or i have to...

You should and you have to retake at least one of those classes.

D's will count towards your credit count, but they will not satisfy a pre requisite requirement. Thus, if you got a D in it, and another class requires it as a pre requisite, you cannot enroll.

As well, if you got 2 D's, your GPA is going to be hurting and you might not be able to declare your major, and or get on academic probation.

Frankly, we all go through shit in our lives during the semester, some of us choose to ignore our other responsibilities and our grades suffer. I personally, do not do that. I work full time and go to school full time and my GPA is never below 3.0
  • edited December 2008
You may as well just drop out because the level of your ignorance is far far OVER 9000.

Not only do you fail at POL, you also fail at enrolling and doing research before you enrolled.

Plus, you ask stupid ass questions.

Lol you may as well, your kind would only drag down everyone around you.

You're gonna get kicked out soon anyways, SFU doesn't take kindly to failures such as yourself.

We're giving you advice. Why continue with a major when you just barely passed the 100 level course? You'll end up wasting a lot of money and time. Why are you getting so offended?

See, this is what happens when SFU lowers their admission requirements.

if i wanted to know what i should spend my money and time on i would have asked kthxbye

No problem, clearly you won't be getting an A for your effort, but thanks for coming out.

why do you idiots post if you cant give out useful advice? you have no idea why he "barely passed" so quit being assholes
  • edited December 2008
Yeah, while I agree that he's kind of slow and not grasping the answers you're giving, he's getting quite a few douchetastic answers here.

Summary: If you want to continue to pursue a major in Poli Sci, retake those courses and obtain a grade of C- or better in order to be qualified to take higher level courses.

Look lazyGUY, we don't need to know why he "barely passed." Besides, like MB said, all he needs to know now is that...

Yes, you do get that 6 credits from the two Political Science courses. However, if you are determined to be in Pol-Sci, you should probably retake the two courses because your GPA is probably <2.00 with that double D

I received a D letter grade for pol210 as well as pol100 and I am planning to major in Political Science. It says on my transcript that i got credit for the courses, however, does it mean I need to retake the courses since I got a D? I believe I need a C- or better in pol100 in order to use it as the pre-req for upper division courses, does this also apply for pol210? my student # is 301077181. Thanks.
However, if you do decide to be a Pol Sci Major (which I don't recommend after your "performance), you will have to retake POL 100 and POL 210 because both of these courses are a part of the Pol Sci lower level course requirement. Unless I am mistaken, you need a grade of C- or better to fulfill the pre-req.

Now, I am just trying to find the line in the calendar that said "you need grade of C- or better to fulfill the pre-req" for a course.
