The "average joe" actually types about as fast as they write, so it's a matter of personal preference.
That is horribly depressing, but I don't know if I can believe it.

This is true, I disagree with that statement...

... well at least with me, I can keep up to the professor talking and write what they say word for word whereas I can't when i am handwriting.

Maybe I'm entering old-fart-dom but I just can't see myself mastering the type-during-a-lecture part. So I scribble like hell in my notebook and download the powerpoints, if any, and try to increase my retention by actually doing all the homework. :)

I'm a slow typer so I just copy notes by hand.

But don't some people say that writing out notes by hand will help you remember the information more clearly? I think it's because there is more contact between your control of the pen and the word you're writing.

I've found that to be true. One of the reasons I show up to class is I've found out how easily I don't retain material if I just look at someone's photocopied notes.

i found that when i type i can be ahead of the prof so i'm paying more attention to understanding what their saying not just jotting stuff down, i even add in a bunch of my own points in between what they say

on the other hand when i handwrite i found i can keep up but i'm slightly lagging behind so i don't really have the time to think about everything being said i'm more just thinking about jotting it all down, which defeats the purpose...

also when i handwrite i constantly look down @ my paper to make sure i'm still on the right line which kills my chain of thought, whereas with a laptop i can constantly focus on the board and prof...
