Course Selection Trouble! NEED ADVICE! Organic chem 281/ SA 150/ SA 101

edited November 2008 in General
Hey! Could you guys give me some solid advice about my course load next semester?

I'm a first year science student who wants to go into MBB. I'm going to take Chem 122, Chem 126 and BISC 101.

Because of my scholarship requirement, I need at least 12 credits and maintain at least a 3.5 GPA. I might take Organic Chem 281 (a core course with Marijuana Paduraru), but that would mean I would have three labs... and I heard the course is really hard. Would it be better if I took it in the summer with an English course? I hope that won't take up all my summer time, because I still want to volunteer.

My other option ... if I decide that the addition of Chem 281 is too heavy... is that I take SA 150 with Fish.... or SA 101 with Hathaway. What's the difference between SA 150 and SA 101 anyways? Which one is lighter?

The advisors at school seem to advocate the idea of taking chem122/126,BISC101 and Chem 281 just because it's more objective. They said some MBB students do it that way. On the other hand, I hear science students calling that course load total suicide. lol.... mixed opinions... can I get some solid feedback?

If you are only first year, i would stay away from chem281 with that mix. I personally am one of those mbb students that did it that way (phy102,chem122,chem126,chem281,mbb221) and it was hell but i pulled thru with a 3.7 semster gpa with a 3.6cgpa.

Nothing is impossible, just the degree of "effort" you need to put in.

wtf how did you do 281 and 222 without finishing chem 122 and 126 beforehand? isnt it a prereq?

    281 only requires 121, not 122 or 126.

    how about mbb 221?
i know....i should check gosfu, but.....

    222 requires 281, which requires 121.

I should point out that 222 also has 282 as a co-requisite, so you have to take it simultaneously (or before).

Haha, yeah your paper invokes Godwin's law.

Only some sort of Nazi would point that out, JayDub.

[edit] - And thanks. Just last night I got voted as new Opinions editor, with JJ leaving, so I'll be starting in January. Should be fun.

Avoid doing three labs in the same semester. Even though 281's lab only runs every second week it's still not a good idea IMO. Push it back into summer if you can, and focus on getting your first-year chemistry/biology finished up.

Re 126. Keep in mind that in some ways the spring is the worst time to take it, because so many students will be doing so. If you can live with the likelihood that the TAs and professor may seem a little more distracted (they're thinking about having to mark 300 lab reports!), then go for it. Just make sure not to slack on the 122 theory, and to read your lab book AND go to office hours.

We TAs get paid to help you. Allow us to do our jobs. :teeth:

    Re Godwin's Law.

Paraphrased: At some point in a heated discussion the probability of the Nazis being mentioned will be close to 1.

Corollary: The first person to mention it has failed to make their point and loses the argument.

My personal aside on Godwin's - Be more creative and mention the Soviets instead. Bonus if you can work in North Korea.
