I don't know how they rank this...but how the hell did 'CITY Uni of Hong Kong' and 'Indian Institute of Technology Delhi' rank higher than SFU??

That's how they come up with the rankings. So basically, Academic Peer Review, Employer Review, Faculty Student Ratio, Citations per Faculty, International Faculty, and International Students.

Looks like we dropped a couple of spots this year, but still pretty good considering the competition around the world. From the list, it looks like we're 10th in Canada, which is pretty good and ahead of many other universities like Calgary, Dalhousie, and others in Canada that didn't even make the list.

I'm not sure about City University of Hong Kong, but Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi is probably, like all IITs, one of the most competitive engineering schools in India (so probably has some of the smartest students in the country). So considering a population of 1 billion plus, I'm thinking it's probably has great minds producing great research.

By the way, I think this Times Ranking and the Shanghai Jiao Tong rankings are the most know (possibly respected) rankings out there. (Although no matter what ranking and what methodology is used, people will still find fault in any ranking)

Doesn't North American think of degrees from India equivalent in worth to toilet paper?

    Ok, let see...

SFU accepts ANYONE with an average over 80%. While the City University of Hong Kong accepts only those with 5 As or something in the Hong Kong government run Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination, and passing those Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination alone is hard... Getting into the City University of Hong Kong is the dream of all my relatives and friends in Hong Kong, and so far, none of them have come close...

It was a decade or so ago. Now, degrees and universities from other part of the world is catching up to North American in terms of reputation and quality.

We'll I think that emphasis, depending on where it's placed, changes the meaning completely. I.e. SFU accepts only those with an average over 80%. While the City University of Hong Kong accepts ANYONE with 5 As etc...

PS. In my previous post, I wasn't saying anything bad about the City University of Hong Kong, I was just saying that I didn't know enough about it. But from what I've heard, they are pretty good in HK.

You know, I think you might be thinking of HKU which is #26 on the list. The City Uni of HK is such crap that people wouldn't even go there even if they were invited. It's like an embarrassment to go there...yet it ranks higher than SFU.

In Hong Kong, getting into a university is, in a Chinese phrase, "harder than reaching the sky." Besides, the campus itself look quite good.

Sure, I may have mixed up my evidences. However, like you said, a "crap" school rank higher than SFU just shows how the quality of education and reputation of SFU have diminished...

This is why I have been kicking myself lately for working too hard in high school...

    We need mo' MONEY!!!

The day that I see thug-dressing wannabes on campus is the day I transfer over to UBC. Let's hope our admission doesn't reach that low.

First, I got to say that all 200 that make the list are probably pretty good considering the staggering amount of universities in the world. So if you are comparing universities on that list, it's not really a bad vs good debate, but maybe more of a good vs better debate.

I think it's really hard to say whether SFU really "dropped" or if other universities are simply getting better. I'm sure as time goes on and China, India and other countries develop, more of their universities will get on the list and may start pushing more Canadian universities out. If you look further up, Queens and Western Ontario had quite large drops as well. Also, without looking at the numbers its hard to say how much of a difference is between the overall score of these universities. Is it a 0.1 point difference, or 50 points?

I'm not sure where you might get that from, it's probably not on the same level as say HKU, but again, I think just being on the top 200 list is pretty good considering how many others are not on the list. Not to mention, just taking a quick look at wikipedia for some data, HKU has 11,000 undergrads, HKUST has 6000, CUHK has 10,000, and City U has 12,000. HK has a population of almost 7 million (2.5 million more than BC), I'm sure the students at City U are probably pretty good considering, what seems to be, intense competition for undergraduate spots in HK (based solely on numbers, but there are probably more factors at play). Imagine if UBC, SFU, and UVic each only had around 13,000 undergrads each.

Some americans aren't that worldly to begin with. I met some who didn't even know where British Columbia was. Sure, they knew Vancouver, but didn't know BC was the province it was in, so how well do you think they knew about UBC?

Brand recognition and quality are different things. I wonder if people could name the best university in Switzerland? Austria? Unless you become a Harvard, Yale, Stanford etc, it's very hard for universities that aren't named University of X (city, state/province, country) to be widely known.

Without googling, who can tell me where Case Western Reserve University, Rice University, and Emory University are?

    Rice university is in China

I see why they type in capitals.
they both have such a small penis, typing in capitals makes them feel bigger than everyone else.
Guess I should type like this from now on
