How to pass Macm 101 by Pearce?

hmm
edited November 2008 in General
Did anyone take MACM 101 with Steven Pearce?
Would it be better to study the textbook or to study his notes?
One assignment is due in a few days, and I didn't understand anything so far!

If you don't understand the prof, i suggest you to study the textbook and do ALOT of examples. Or ask TA for help but when i took it, I had useless TA's as well. My class final average was 30% lol

I took it over DE with Dixon.

You should be fine for the first 3 sections. Propositional Logic, Predicate Logic, Sets, and Functions aren't that hard. The later stuff is way harder though.

Class average for the midterm was like 40/60 and 26/70 for the final. The final was way different from the midterm.

Just try to stay above the average, he'll curve it.

yea the class is scaled alot

i dont understand how any academic institution can accept a prof teaching a class where the average is a failing, or near failing mark...is the material really that unteachable? Or should the amount of information be split into two classes

From what I've seen, there's a lack of practice materials. The textbook aren't very good, and additional information is very hard to find on the Internet. I guess that's why.

Also, my MACM101 class had an average of around 70%, which was the highest the professor has ever gotten in all his years of teaching. Imagine that.

Err.. I thought MACM101 wasn't too bad at all... I think it's all these comp sci kids that come storming into SFU not knowing what to expect. Then they get bombarded with a wad of math and logic and go "WTF am I doing? I thought this would be easy!"

Pretty much what it is. MACM is not hard, especially not MACM 101. People just don't necessarily study properly.

Including macm I've had 3 courses so far with ridiculous averages like that (Math 151 and CMPT 150)

Did you feel stressed out the entire time?

I remember during STAT 201 when our class average for the final was about 37% I was 100% sure I was going to fail the class, not knowing anyone else or how they were doing in the class. I somehow ended up with a decent grade.

I just think it looks really bad on the teachers.

    somewhat.
I got an A- with 63% in cmpt. Not expecting that. Not a very good teacher.
Macm I also had a pretty bad teacher.
and Math151, well, it's just plain hard.

    I'm way behind here, but...

Pay close attention to Pearce's notes. Realize that his averages will be quite low (ours was 12/35 for the first midterm, and 21/55 for the final, IIRC).

Know how to do proofs, well.

I actually enjoyed his class and learned a lot.
