New Faculty Stuff

edited August 2008 in General
In May 2008, the Board of Governors of SFU approved changes to SFUs Faculty structure, including the creation of new Faculties. The changes are effective April 2009, and the new Faculties will accept students for the Fall 2009 term.

Although some Faculties are changing and some existing departments are moving to new Faculties, the SFU degrees awarded are not changing. Students entering, or already admitted to or enrolled in, academic programs will still receive their degrees in their major field of study. For example, students majoring in Geography will continue to receive a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science in that major, but in the Faculty of Environment, rather than the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Students in programs and majors that are moving into new Faculties (listed below) will receive their degrees in the new Faculties following the Convocation of June 2009.

The changes to Faculties are as follows:

- Faculty of Applied Sciences -
School of Computing Science remains
School of Engineering Science remains
School of Communication relocates
School of Interactive Arts and Technology relocates
School of Resource and Environmental Management relocates
School of Kinesiology relocates

- Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences -
School for the Contemporary Arts relocates
Department of Geography relocates
All other departments and schools remain

- Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology -
School of Communication
School for the Contemporary Arts
School of Interactive Arts and Technology
Masters of Publishing Program

- Faculty of Environment - (final programming to be approved by Senate)
Centre for Sustainable Community Development
Department of Geography
Environmental Science Program
Graduate Certificate in Developmental Studies
School of Resource and Environmental Management

- Faculty of Science -
School of Kinesiology joins the existing Science departments and becomes the department of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology

Doesn't apply to me but applies to some of my friends. I don't understand why they won't let people who are currently in the process of doing their degrees to make use of the new rules (or at least have the choice to).

Why even bother announcing to the older students that the administration has made a new "improved" way of separating faculties, but oh, no, the current students are not in on it.

I don't understand why it even makes a difference that students currently enrolled cant make any use of something that makes no difference. Or does it?

I've always wondered why Communications was even in the Faculty of Applied Science.

What science of communicating is there to apply? Seems more fitting under Arts and Social Science.

Kinesiology too. Seemed more fitting under Health Sciences.

If they actually put the current students in the new faculties (without a choice, that is), there'd be a shitload more complaints than if they didn't.

My guess is they probably figured that letting you have a choice costs too much to administer.

I'm confused, why would there be complaints, why does any of this matter?

mm reading it again i'm not sure anymore.

is the faculty written anywhere on the degree or related items?

The actual degree is staying the same, except your piece of paper will say "Faculty of Environment" instead of "Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences" if you're majoring in Geography for example.

Unless people actually care what faculty they're getting their paper from... it's still from SFU.

^ I know mostly everyone I know majoring in Kin is quite pissed they won't be recieving a BSc and the new title which "sounds smarter"...
I think a BSc carries more weight in alot of the careers related to Kin

This change will apply to ALL students (new and continuing) in those Faculties and departments as of Fall 2009.

I can't tell - are graduate students also affected by this? Me, not so much, since I'm in straight-up Chemistry which is science no matter which way you slice it. :) But I know some graduates in other faculties who might get jiggled around; I wonder if they'd have to change supervisors or get their supervisory committees re-approved.

That could suck. It took me ages to get my committee all lined up. :|
