300-level courses

edited August 2008 in General
recently my friend explained her problem to me:

to enroll in 300-level courses for Fall 2009 (yes! she's thinking ahead)
she needs to have 60 credits by the end of Spring 2009.
(she is in Business and prerequisite for 300-level Bus courses are 60 credits)
she made a point and said even if you DO take summer courses
the credits wont be processed until Aug, when the semester is over
and course registration is in July.

she calculated and only has 59 credits (if she takes 4 courses in Fall and Spring, which is what she did in 2007/2008).
what would you suggest to her?
take a 4 credit course? take a 5th course?

thanks in advance :)

If I'm not mistaken, they'll assume that you will pass and get all the credits and let you enroll into 300 level courses at the time of registration and if you don't pass and don't get that 60 credits, they'll kick you out of the course by the time the credits are processed.

If I remember correctly, when I tried to do that it wouldn't let me register, but I just talked to the advisor and she gave me a waiver to register.

ooh! so you had less than 60 credits when spring semester ended?
did you ended up having to go up to campus or just call the adviser?

theres often 4 credit classes offered in summer semesters as well

also, you don't call advisors, i doubt theyll answer their phones during the busy season or at all

    make an appointment or email

No, I'm actually an incoming student. But I'm thinking about it this way:

Incoming first years from high school (generally no credits except some AP kids) are one of the first groups on the list for registration. By thier second semesters they'll be the very last group for registering because they'll be "first years with some credits". Since I'm going to become part of that group, I'm pretty sure I'm going to be last to pick courses. Meaning that the system took in account of my credits. They wouldn't see me without any credits and assume that I'm an incoming student and give me first choice for registration again.

So your friend, when she's in the process of completing her 60 credits, I'm thinking the system would assume that she will pass and get all those credits and allow her to enroll in those 300 level classes. If she fails a class and only ends up with 57 credits, when the credits are processed, she would be kicked out of the course.

If you really want to know I suggest you jsut call or e-mail an advisor, it seems like a simple question with a straighforward answer.

    Good luck =]

I think I had 58 credits, or would have, after the Fall semester. So when the Fall registration for Spring started, I just went to speak to the advisor since I was on campus anyways. I always prefer to speak to them in person, it avoids a lot of ambiguities.
