Q and Science Requirements

edited April 2009 in General
I'm an Arts student and I'm a bit worried about what courses to take in order to fulfill my Quantitative and Science requirements.

I've searched through a lot of threads and posted all over the place but I decided to post a new one to explain my background a bit more for better input.

I am an Arts student.
All my interests seem to be in the HUM field so I'll probably major in Humanities (dunno what I'll do with that though =p)
I never took Math 12 since I hate math with a passion.
I've taken Biology 12 and Chem 12 and ended up with a B on both courses. (I took Bio 12 online in the summer and did the provincial, I took Chem 12 in my grade 12 year, slacked and didn't do the provincial)

I've heard that CHEM 191/192 is easy... but then I hear from others never to take CHEM courses unless you need it...

Here's my 'plan'
Take CHEM 191 my second semester, and if it's easy/I like it then take 192 the first semester of my second year. Then, all my Q and Sci requirements will be done with.
If I don't like 191, I'll take CMPT 165 (probably summer semester of my first year) for Science and PHIL XX1.

However, if I am to do CMPT 165 and PHIL XX1, I really want to take them my first year, so I'll probably take PHIL XX1 second semester along with CHEM 191 so then I can't do my first plan...

Any suggestions?? I'm really confused right now =(

i'd say don't do the big three (phys, chem, bio) unless you need to, really like them, or know you're really good at them, it's an unnecessary risk to your gpa otherwise. that doesn't mean you have to take cmpt or phil, but those seem to be popular choices.

in the end you have to decide on something, and ultimately it's your own choice. people with strengths in different areas will tell you to take different courses, you have to exercise some discretion with people's advice.

It also depends on your ability, since the population is fairly bell curved, the majority opinion only works if you're in the middle section of the curve. If you're above or below average, you should take that into consideration.

For the record, I was the one who recommended Chemistry 191 and 192 to Summerheaven. I have taken Chemistry 192 and I am happy to say that the course is quite easy and you DO NOT need any Chemistry experience to do well in the course. Hell, I didn't even take Chemistry 11 or 12 and I still get an A in Chemistry 192.

Kin 143 for your SCI requirement*************************
DO THIS!!!!! If you can actually get into this class I heard it is the easiest Sci course. I wouldnt not touch any chem, phys or bio, and CMPT is still a risk for some people, I have not heard anything bad about KIN 143 except its hard to get into. I tried to get into kin but i couldnt with my shitty reg date when i was trying to get my sci requirement done, try to enroll in that class.

Try to enroll in this your first semester because your reg date will be shit second semester ;), I'd personally take your English class first semester too unless your high school prepared you to do essays very well.

randomuser: What do you learn there? I HATED PE in highschool... I'm really worried now, about what to take for my Science and Q requirement...
  • edited June 2008
    It's not PE.

Your just read books and do exams on how to run and do push ups.

Questions include: "If you have x amount of stamina, how many pushups can you do?"

Here's what I am planning to officially do for my '4' classes that need to be S and Q... I am going to do 2.

When I have my drivers license next semester, I will do EDUC211 or 212 (it's about teaching math) - a Q & an S!! Shocker! i will either do both of these, OR wait until next year for CHEM192 (also, a Q and an S).

Are there any entry level Computer Science courses you could do? "Computers and Society" perhaps?

I think it's kind of bullshit that there's Q and B-Sci courses designed for arts students. Come on, Hitchhiker's guide to everyday math? Meanwhile I have to take the arts courses that normal arts students take for my credits.

CMPT 320 is an arts course. I don't know why it has a B-Sci designation. There's no math or science or algorithms at all. You discuss issues in technology and write papers.

how about geography? geo 111 is not the easiest, but at least imo is most useful out of all 1XX lvl science. (maybe im bias cause im a geography major haha)
