A question about the internets, calling all CMPT people

edited July 2008 in General
I just have a question. How come when I go to sfu.ca I HAVE to enter www. as opposed to when I go to ubc.ca I can just type in ubc.ca. Does it have something to do with secure server or am I way off base, I'm just curious.

It's just the way their webserver or DNS resolution is set up. Not really anything to do with secure servers per se, near as I can tell.

it's totally arbitrary and stupid on SFU's part. Not the only (or most significant) thing that SFU fails at.

The www is depreciated an we're all better off not using it.

i dont think http://sfu.ca works either, just www.sfu.ca
i wonder who the webmaster is for SFU, i dont think it helps in prospective students when your site wont load

but then again anyone who cant figure out how to get to a website maybe shouldnt be a student
