Rep Point System

edited July 2008 in General
The Rep Point System would place a small button at the bottom of each post. Viewing users that find the post useful can click on the button and the member who made the post will get a +1. Users can also choose -1 for posts that are negative or unwelcome. Over time, more helpful members will earn a higher rep status. Although this creates inequality in terms of "respect," it is a good way to recognize those members that visit the forum on a daily basis and provide good useful answers to members questions.

Please vote and let us know what you think of this feature being implemented on talkSFU.

    I don't really care.

On one hand, I think a person's "reputation" should be decided by their posts and opinions, not some superficial meter under their name. It could also make the forum more about "getting rep" and less about .. I don't know .. talking?

On the other hand, it could increase interest and participation.

No. This has been implemented in plenty of other forums with rarely any good results. Although I doubt people here would, there's been occurrences of people taking it too seriously. This also has led to people "getting back" at those they don't like using the system (usually effective when the aforementioned taking too seriously happens), and creating an undesirable atmosphere in other cases.

Although if you want to do it as an experiment just for starters, go ahead and give it a try.

i think this is something that should be tested for a week or 2 before implementing it permanently

Without this feature even being implemented, I can already tell you who will have low rep, and who will have SUPER low rep. I'm sure any regular to the forums would be able to. Probably predict it quite accurately. My point is, if that's the case, there's really no need because it's just going to be abused.

imo it'll just be a popularity contest

I think it would promote quality posts over quantity

only if rep can go negative, that way there is a balance

you can be infamous or famous,

    rather than just:

    high rep or nothing

Yeah Peter, I'd give you like -1000 reps lol

I think this is a good idea, because it lets the user know if he/she is really having his/her opinions heard and respected OR if people do not care about and respect his/her opinion.
