SFU 2008 ranking

edited June 2008 in General
From wikipedia:
SFU is rated as one of Canada’s top universities as it was ranked 68th in the world and 4th in Canada in 2008 Ranking of World Universities.

--------------------

I'm not sure what the ranking is based on but I was surprised SFU ranked higher than waterloo and mcgill.

What do you guys think?

What, 4th!?!? That doesn't sound very accurate.

    Oh wait. It's from Wikipedia.

I just looked at the source of this boast and I want to ask, "who the fuc* run www.webometrics.info anyway?" If it is not a reputable source, then SFU's wiki page need to drink a nice cup of shut the fuck up.

yea, the webometrics is a weird ranking

I think one of the most reputable ones is Times Higher Education (although many will say that ANY ranking is biased and not reliable).

From this it looks like SFU is 10th in Canada and 139th in the world, which is pretty good I think considering all the ones above it are older and with med schools (except for Waterloo).

McGill better than Stanford!? I have my reservations.

I think that leads to another issue, reputation vs. objective data (or as objective as these rankings can get). These rankings use mostly objective data, (#of faculty with phds, class sizes etc.), but most people probably base their perceptions of universities on reputation.

Since america dominates most things (check out fortune 500 companies and see how many are american), we probably know more and have a higher status attached to american universities than canadian ones. Not to mention that stanford students have created name brand things like yahoo and youtube, but who knows, maybe mcgill is better at things that like medicine, or chemistry or law that don't get as much recognition.

In terms of student satisfaction, we rank pretty low. I remember reading an article in Maclean magazine that shows different student satisfaction rate among other Canadian universities.

I just did an in depth investigation of who is running Webometrics and it turns out that that website is run by some think tank in, of all places, the Kingdom of Spain.

Not that I have anything against Spanish people (in fact, I like Paella), but what authority do these Spaniards have in judging how good we are? They are on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, for god sake. Just stick with Flamenco, shut up, and leave the ranking to more reputable organizations in North America.

man your so racist student, "OMG they are from spain, they don't know how to run a web site, let the North American's do it who are vastly superior to these damn spanish people"

I am mad that the PR people of SFU, who are more than likely wrote much of the SFU article on Wikipedia, are using un-reputable sources such as Webometrics to advertise our school.

I MUCH prefer honesty and truth in advertisement, not that SFU needs any because we and UBC pretty much have a monopoly of accredited institute in the lower mainland.

Just because I go to SFU we have to accept that SFU is the best in everything? Do yo know what that reminds me of...
