FireFox 3

edited June 2008 in General
I just downloaded it, I like it.

Since I'm on a mac, I don't have a functional version of internet explorer, even though IE was my fav nothing seems to even work with IE anymore when I use work computers.

Further, Safari is the shittiest piece of shit web browser I've probably ever used. People talk about macs never crashing, I think safari has frozen or crashed on me more times than IE ever did in 8 years using that.

I haven't tried FF3 yet...what kind of features does it have over the current version?

You can enter addresses (URLs) into an "address bar" and the application finds the server that URL points to and then fetches said pages and displays them to you in a visual way.

Oh, I had been running the new Firefox 3 release all day and didn't even realize it. Gotta love Ubuntu's automatic updates.

I'm not a fan of the new URL bar because you have to "train" it and it's often wrong about what site I'm trying to type in. Overall, FF3 is a huge improvement though.

you can download skins. For example, my Firefox looks like Internet Explorer 7. I don't know if there are skins for FF3 yet though.

Opera 9.5 just came out (coincidence?) and it's really great, as well.

Overall, I prefer Opera to Firefox, but FF still has a leg up in a couple of areas. Opera does still display about 1% of all webpages oddly, and its inline spell-checker has to be installed as an addon, it doesn't come as part of the standard install.

That said, it has its own download manager for normal downloads and torrent files, a built in IRC client and podcast manager. It's also generally just much faster and cleaner, and everything is built into the browser's sidebar, rather than popping up new windows (ala Firefox's downloads popup.)

i spoke too soon, this browser has some rendering issues, but im sure they will get fixed eventually

ff3 rendering issues? i haven't noticed any... there are a couple sites that were basically built for ie and thus screw up any standards compliant browser (ie ff)...but otherwise, tis good.

but uhm...yeah. ff3 cleaned up the bookmarks (FINALLY!), which is nice, if you're a bookmark whore like me.

oh..and it's faster and users less memory..

but otherwise..not many changes. i still need several addons to get it the way i like it (put the downloads along the bottom instead of popping up in an annoying window, move the freaking close tab button to a consistent place (What a dumb decision, seriously?!) and fix the tab opening/closing order, which is also bad). customize google is also a nice addon. but.....none of these work with ff3 yet. hurray.

Yes, but every feature you just mentioned for Opera, you can download via add-ons in Firefox. You can even download an add-on that disables the download pop-up and re-configure it into the sidebar. The think I like about FF, is that it comes essentially as an empty shell with basic browsing capabilities, and then you can add on more features as you see fit. So if you just need a browser, then it's not too bloated for your needs.

I just uninstalled FireFox 3 because it couldn't use any of the themes I wanted.

Old school firefox is where it's at.

Fx3 is pretty good. There's a few minor issues that I still haven't gotten around, but otherwise it's great.
