HELP! BUS 254 - Prof refuses to give solutions

edited June 2008 in General
Hi guys,

I'm taking this class, Managerial Accounting, with this prof that refuses to give out the solutions to the majority of the problems in the book. That is, refusing to give us scanned copies of the solutions. I understand that there are implications with the copyright laws. But, I've also heard that other profs do give out solutions in copies/files. Plus, my prof for my financial accounting class gave us the solutions to every problem in the book. I don't know what her problem is.

She does go through several assigned problems in the tutorial. She reads over the answers, doesn't even bother to copy the solution on the board for most questions. If we want more, we need to make an appointment with her, because she has no regular office hour.

I've tried talking to her. But she remained firm about this, completely disregarded same requests from other students repeatedly in tutorials.

I have no problem dealing with a prof that can't teach. But without the solutions, I feel that I'm gonna fail this class. And it's too late to drop for any refund at all.

I've just found out that she forwarded my email to the whole class. In her response, she implied that I am an irresponsible student who's asking for the solution because she doesn't make an effort. I feel really uncomfortable with this. Should I tell her that?

HELP! What should I do? I'll do anything to get a copy of the solutions.

Complain to the department head, go over her head with what she did and watch her get in trouble.

Cant you just write down the answer in tutorial? Or make an appointment with her?

I did write down the answers in tutorials. I just think it's a good idea to have more solutions handy when I want to do extra problems. For me, it's really frustrating to do problems without sol. that you can compare to right away. That's why I asked her to give out the sol. to everyone. I tried to avoid confrontation by emailing her. I'd never imagine that she'd do that.

Damn, this is what I'm for in the Fall?

    Shit.

    Man, that really sucks!

Have you checked out the textbook's website yet? They have some check figures you can use. Not the full solutions, but at least you can check if you're on the right track with your answers.

i remember my prof gave solutions to only the assigned questions each week. ...is that what your prof is doing?

anyway, take a look into the Check Figures that flo-ra mentioned.

    otherwise, i say tough luck...

go to her office hours for the rest of the solutions then...you seem a bit spoiled to be honest

but her email thing was kind of rude

He said that she doesn't have office hours.

But why don't you go make an appointment with her? Sounds like the 2nd best solution after Flora's.

Thanks for all the replies guys!!! I really appreciate them.

She does give out answers to the few of the assigned problems in tutorials.

I'm still looking for more solutions to the problems. The other class has a set of 29 pg sol. posted for additional practice on their course website; our website isn't even up an running yet.

Randomuser is right, I am spoiled, because all the profs I've had really listened to students. Without the email thing, I probably won't even post on the forum. I guess I just needed to vent.

I will check out the check figure, thanks flo-ra!

Don't worry vonnie, she's a sessional with a day job at Grant Thornton. You may not get her in fall. I am sure not every prof teaches like her.

Thanks guys, I feel much better now!!

Hey, if the textbook is popular then you can try to download it online. I found the entire solution manual for my Calculus textbook using bittorrent.

    I tried already...but no luck

I'm pretty sure profs HAVE to have some officer hours per week, even if they are not scheduled, you should be able to make an appointment.

If not, as I said go complain to the department head if you want to raise hell
  • edited June 2008
i don't know if you should complain to the department. what are you really gonna complain about? that she won't give you the solutions to questions she didn't assign. The sol'ns you want are extra questions that aren't required, so she has no duty or obligation to supply you with soln's. they're available if you wanna make an appt, but why would she bother to copy/scan soln's for all the questions students may or may not decide to do as practice questions.

the email thing is different, but she probably sent it out to prevent similar questions/concerns. you could complain but i think it wouldn't really accomplish anything. i've had a couple profs do this and no marks/personal info was revealed so i don't think the school would be terribly concerned. you might just end up irritating your prof even more...

I went to GoSFU and checked the instructor's name. It appers that there are two sections of BUS 254 and the professors are Mary Chong and Monica Sood.
