Misconception about Canadian Med Schools?

edited November 2006 in General
i don't know if there are a lot of US citizen who attend canadian medical school on this forum, but I've been asked numerous times by family and friends from the US whether it is easier to get into a canadian med school and if that's the reason why I decided to go there. i don't know if any of you have encountered this question before but i am just sick of having to explain myself. Canadian schools are NOT easier to get into than US med schools. there are parents from my church who come up to me regularly and ask me how to get into a canadian schools cuz their child don't have the best grades but would still like to go to med school. they are making it sound like canadian schools are like carribean school or something. sigh. anyhow, just wanna know if i am the only one in this situation.

i'm with you on that. what is this misconception of canadian universities being inferior to mediocre American institutions in general! i mean there's one thing about harvard, and all those ivy league schools, but my friend is at NYU paying a ridiculous amount of money per year (~50,000$) for an education she could get here--at home!

but anyway, my friend's sister got into UBC med school after her 3rd try EVEN THOUGH she was getting above average marks in her undergrad and on her MCATs. I hear Dalhousie's pretty tough too. and most of all, getting into med school doesn't necessarily mean they'll accept an application because its marks are top notch, it depends on what extracurriculars the applicants have done......i don't like it when some people think academic marks are what defines their future. it's not. though, it's an important part, social connections, experiencing life outside of school is vital to everyone's well-being!

    (sorry, i ranted a bit).

I agree with you on the part that academics isn't everything.

Education is important but street smarts is what makes you rich.

Australian Med schools face the same problem. people assume that the requirements should be lower because it is in a different country, it should be easier for people to get in.

you guys should check out this link if you are interested in med school
