Need some advice on cheaters
Last semester for my last final, the room wasn't big enough to let people sit one seat apart, so there were some people sitting right next to each other. It so happens that I was between two people. Sometime during the test I noticed one of the guys sitting beside me was glancing in my direction often. Not unusual I suppose, but then it soon became clear that he was trying to cheat off me, because he was writing only when I was. I stopped for a good 5-10 minutes thinking about a question and I noticed he wasn't writing anything. I also happened to glance at his paper once, and he had almost the exact things I wrote, confirming my suspicion.
Now it makes me mad that someone would use me like that. Question is, should I have told the professor about this?

You could have written some fake answers and changed them later.
1. write some shit answers and let him copy, then change it
or
2. write "Stop copying, RIGHT NOW" and let him see it.
or
3. Just cover up and watch him fail
i dont understand y u just didnt cover it up with ur arm or sumthing, wudnt have been that hard. Just dont snitch, chances are no one will notice nething.
You call him out goood.
then fix it afterwards of course
unless you like being a little whiny bitch
it'll bite him in the ass eventually
fake answers or call him out.
trust me u dont wanna be known as a snitch.
maybe if he did it multiple times
isn't there some kind of 3 strike rule, unless its massive cheating
Snitch? Seriously? Seriously??? Are you really that immature? I can't believe you even used the word.
DaNoobie: how would the prof know if you're actively trying to share your answers? Many (most? all?) of them make it your responsibility to prevent others from copying your answers, and if they do, you get hit as well.
madscientist: of course you tell the prof, not only for your own sake but also for the sake of every other legitimate student.
if you have a vagina you tell the prof
that's pretty much what I've gathered from the responses here.
Prime are you that immature?
"OMG TEACHERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR HE IS CHEATTTTTTTTTTING OFF MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE *cry cry whine whine*"
Oh, and I used the word "snitch" because that's exactly what it is.
Who here has not been told in EVERY class that cheating and plagiarism will result in serious consequences?
I would be more worried that one of us would be accused of cheating after people marked it and that I would be the person unfairly accused.
Why should someone who clearly hasnt done any of the work get to get by, by coping off someone else who probably put the effort in?
I've glanced at peoples papers before but never to copy answers, if I have it was to gauge where they were in the exam to see if I was lagging behind. I would be very worried if it was a short answer test and someone was copying my answers for my own accidental expulsion or academic punishment.
If it was something like multiple choice noone would ever be able to tell but from the sound of this post it sounds like short answer questions. I would say something after the class, and not embarrass them in front of everyone else.
To summarize, if I were worried about getting in shit cause of some douche copying off me I would turn him in. If it were cheating were there would be no chance of something accidentally falling on me I would not care. Only when my own well being would be compromised
"You don't want to be a snitch"
Are you fucking kidding me? Are you seriously fucking kidding me?! University's a competition, everyone's fighting against each other to make it out of the place with a degree and into the work force. Why should I let some idiot asshole come into an exam, rip off my work, and just walk off whistling like a moron, while I had to spend weeks actually listening in class and learning the stuff?
I don't want to risk the chance of being called "a thief calling thief." What's worse is that the cheater could have copied my answers and modified them into better ones, thus causing him/her to get a higher mark than me which makes it seem like I'm the copier.
1. Let them cheat.
2. Stop them from cheating by covering your work better or writing fake answers.
3. Tell the professor.
Obviously you can't just let them cheat, so..
I'm advocating option #2 over option #3.
1) be a man
2) be a pansy
3) be a bigger pansy with sand in your vagina
Also, I don't recommend purposely writing wrong answers because:
1) You may not have enough time to change them (especially written questions).
2) You may forget about the wrong answer and forget to change it.
3) Biggest reason. The cheater is not a complete idiot. He sees you write 2+4=12. Then he sees you change it to 2+4=6. Either way, he'll get the correct answer eventually; plus, he'll think you're a bastard (not very good for your health).
However, I do agree that it is up to the administration to create an environment which discourages cheating. For example, a room where you sit beside another person (without blinders) during an exam would not be conducive to academic honesty. I remember in high school, we had to use graphing calculators for math and physics. The teachers did not understand how the calculators worked, so people made programs. Some even put notes. Well, even though I didn't want to cheat, I had to, more or less, to be "competitive" with others. For example, if anyone is getting the formula from their calculators, why the heck would I spend time deriving it? If given the right opportunity, everyone will cheat.
Yah, pretty sure our system works the other way around.
Put yourself in the shoes of an unsuspecting victim. Or hell, just a prof/exam person who doesnt like you for whatever reason & just need a way to amuse themselves.
and i'm not defending it, i'm just making a note of what happens in practise.
