Need some advice on cheaters

edited March 2009 in General
Last semester for my last final, the room wasn't big enough to let people sit one seat apart, so there were some people sitting right next to each other. It so happens that I was between two people. Sometime during the test I noticed one of the guys sitting beside me was glancing in my direction often. Not unusual I suppose, but then it soon became clear that he was trying to cheat off me, because he was writing only when I was. I stopped for a good 5-10 minutes thinking about a question and I noticed he wasn't writing anything. I also happened to glance at his paper once, and he had almost the exact things I wrote, confirming my suspicion.
Now it makes me mad that someone would use me like that. Question is, should I have told the professor about this?

No. That would make you a snitch, which is worse than a cheater.

You could have written some fake answers and changed them later.

telling the professor is a choice, but if you really wana mess him up, then:

    1. write some shit answers and let him copy, then change it
    or
    2. write "Stop copying, RIGHT NOW" and let him see it.
    or
    3. Just cover up and watch him fail

imo this is a load of shit
You could have written some fake answers and changed them later.
But this is what I would've done. In fact, I've done it before!

If the class is curved, it would piss me off. Otherwise, I wouldn't care. Why didn't you just hunch forward and cover your paper?
  • edited May 2008
Inform the professor of this incident IMMEDIATELY because that cheater may actually approach the professor and accuse YOU of cheating.

What Ether says is true, being a snitch is much worse than being a cheater.
i dont understand y u just didnt cover it up with ur arm or sumthing, wudnt have been that hard. Just dont snitch, chances are no one will notice nething.

That's just stupid. When someone's cheating from you, you call out that son of a bitch and get him thrown out of school.

    You call him out goood.

if theres a "draw such and such molecule or compound" or w/e type question, you should make the drawing look like a penis

then fix it afterwards of course
  • edited May 2008
    whoooooooo cares

unless you like being a little whiny bitch

it'll bite him in the ass eventually

but the problem is if he gets nailed during the exam, you will get nailed with him for "exposing answers" therefore:

fake answers or call him out.

Why would you want him thrown out of school? and thats not calling him out, thats just being a bitch over something that could easily be ignored. anyways i would prefer being kicked out of school for cheating than be known as a snitch. and summer semester has already started, im pretty sure you would have been caught already if anything was noticed.
trust me u dont wanna be known as a snitch.

he wouldn't even get thrown out of the school for that, lol

maybe if he did it multiple times

isn't there some kind of 3 strike rule, unless its massive cheating

Wow. I'm not sure what kind of society you were raised in, but snitching on someone is just one of those things that you don't do.

Ether, lazyGUY: apparently none of you graduated kindergarten...
Snitch? Seriously? Seriously??? Are you really that immature? I can't believe you even used the word.

DaNoobie: how would the prof know if you're actively trying to share your answers? Many (most? all?) of them make it your responsibility to prevent others from copying your answers, and if they do, you get hit as well.

madscientist: of course you tell the prof, not only for your own sake but also for the sake of every other legitimate student.

    in other words
if you have a vagina you tell the prof

that's pretty much what I've gathered from the responses here.

    Prime are you that immature?

"OMG TEACHERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR HE IS CHEATTTTTTTTTTING OFF MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE *cry cry whine whine*"

^ I was going to reply but Triple said it best.

Oh, and I used the word "snitch" because that's exactly what it is.

Uh we are all in university I think we're beyond the point of being snitches and telling on eachother.

Who here has not been told in EVERY class that cheating and plagiarism will result in serious consequences?

I would be more worried that one of us would be accused of cheating after people marked it and that I would be the person unfairly accused.

Why should someone who clearly hasnt done any of the work get to get by, by coping off someone else who probably put the effort in?

I've glanced at peoples papers before but never to copy answers, if I have it was to gauge where they were in the exam to see if I was lagging behind. I would be very worried if it was a short answer test and someone was copying my answers for my own accidental expulsion or academic punishment.

If it was something like multiple choice noone would ever be able to tell but from the sound of this post it sounds like short answer questions. I would say something after the class, and not embarrass them in front of everyone else.

To summarize, if I were worried about getting in shit cause of some douche copying off me I would turn him in. If it were cheating were there would be no chance of something accidentally falling on me I would not care. Only when my own well being would be compromised

Wow so a lot of people here actually think cheating is okay? Isn't cheating completely unfair? I mean I wouldn't be happy if I spent my weekend studying really hard just so some slacker dumbass could copy my answers and get the same mark as me. And why should I care if the idiot thinks I'm a "snitch"? I'm pretty sure I'm not friends with this person anyway.

It's not called snitching, it's called calling out plagiarism and idiots. Who do you think you are? Al Capone?

No, it's called covering my ass in case the professor decides that I'm the one who cheated. I honestly can't believe how childish some of you people are.

"You don't want to be a snitch"

Are you fucking kidding me? Are you seriously fucking kidding me?! University's a competition, everyone's fighting against each other to make it out of the place with a degree and into the work force. Why should I let some idiot asshole come into an exam, rip off my work, and just walk off whistling like a moron, while I had to spend weeks actually listening in class and learning the stuff?
  • edited May 2008
I don't think I would do anything except try to cover up my answers better.

I don't want to risk the chance of being called "a thief calling thief." What's worse is that the cheater could have copied my answers and modified them into better ones, thus causing him/her to get a higher mark than me which makes it seem like I'm the copier.

I don't think any of us are innocent to certain forms of academic dishonesty. Like sharing answers for assignments, or even a little bit of plagiarism. I mean, cheating on an exam is pretty bad, but it's certainly in the same ballpark.

Just to clarify, If someone is trying to cheat off you, you have 3 options:

    1. Let them cheat.

    2. Stop them from cheating by covering your work better or writing fake answers.

    3. Tell the professor.

Obviously you can't just let them cheat, so..
    I'm advocating option #2 over option #3.

Option 2 just stops them from cheating for now. They'll still continue to cheat in the future cause they know there won't be any consequences to it. I'd much rather put a stop to their shit right then and there.

    so you have three options

    1) be a man

    2) be a pansy

    3) be a bigger pansy with sand in your vagina

That's not true. Although, it might seem "dishonorable" to tell the professor, but it might be necessary to protect yourself. If the professor finds out that you have the exact same answers as someone else, then he would probably think one of you copied from the other or you both collaborated. Either way, both of you are going be screwed. I would rather be a "snitch" than get kicked out of SFU. But, do it so that the cheater does not know you told the prof.

Also, I don't recommend purposely writing wrong answers because:

    1) You may not have enough time to change them (especially written questions).
    2) You may forget about the wrong answer and forget to change it.
    3) Biggest reason. The cheater is not a complete idiot. He sees you write 2+4=12. Then he sees you change it to 2+4=6. Either way, he'll get the correct answer eventually; plus, he'll think you're a bastard (not very good for your health).

However, I do agree that it is up to the administration to create an environment which discourages cheating. For example, a room where you sit beside another person (without blinders) during an exam would not be conducive to academic honesty. I remember in high school, we had to use graphing calculators for math and physics. The teachers did not understand how the calculators worked, so people made programs. Some even put notes. Well, even though I didn't want to cheat, I had to, more or less, to be "competitive" with others. For example, if anyone is getting the formula from their calculators, why the heck would I spend time deriving it? If given the right opportunity, everyone will cheat.

Yah, pretty sure our system works the other way around.

Put yourself in the shoes of an unsuspecting victim. Or hell, just a prof/exam person who doesnt like you for whatever reason & just need a way to amuse themselves.

i'm pretty sure the system is if only somewhat biased against students.

and i'm not defending it, i'm just making a note of what happens in practise.
