I took 4 in my first semester, and 5 in my second.
My GPA was better with 5 actually.

    same here.

buddy, your first mistake was listening to the academic adviser. I did that and ended up taking two pairs of the hardest courses i have ever taken in my life because they "recommend that everyone do them in their first year".

Great work, you just made your first major mistake by listening to the academic advisors. They are train to offer you advices that will maximize the amount of time you will spend in SFU, thus squeezing more money from you.

Even though I personally took 5 courses in my first semester, however I believe that it would be wise of you take only four. Afterall, you are already going to take two 200-level courses in your first semester. Given the fact that you probably wouldn't be too familiar with course expectation, you should really take only four.

    4-5 courses is definitely manageable.

Unless the courses are notoriously hard or require lots of constant work, you should be fine.

keep in mind, the more courses you take per semester, the faster you can get out of this place.

Taking more courses IN YOUR PROGRAM per semester get you off this glacier (SFU) sooner. Just taking random courses that those academic advisors advise you to take will get you nowhere but an Academic Probation. In all honesty, why the fuc* should people take a first year English course if their program doesn't need it? Why the fuc* should they take their word for granted?

Cause they need to fill the W.

You need 40 courses to graduate so if you take at least 10 a year, you should be able to finish in 4 years.

I took five in my first semester and six in my second and the one with six had a way better GPA than my first semester.

On a side note, I have been taking 5 courses since I first entered SFU in 2006. However, this semester will probably be the last semester that I will be doing full course load after what I experienced this semester.

Yeah, however there are a lot easier W courses out there than English.

I took five my first semester and my GPA was over 3.5. That said I've done worse at times taking four. It depends what you're taking and what time you have...

three courses is just way too little, especially if you do not have a job or work very little.

I took 4 my first semester and I found the workload manageable.

are you coming to sfu from another college or high school? or after an extended break from any academic study? that could make a difference...

i was out of school for four years until i went back and got that 3.5, the only thing i would see problematic is if youre going into an arts program without taking first year english first, the only hurdle i can really see is bombing essays, anything else is just laziness

you don't really need english to write good essays though...you don't really need english for anything, really, unless it's part of your program reqs. Everything you need you could learn elsewhere.

i sure did, they didnt teach us how to even do essays in school district 57

plus the pre reqs i had forced me to take two first year english courses anyway, but i wish i had taken them first semester rather than afterwards
