Stupid or Smart: Rate this persons goal

edited May 2008 in General
I met someone whos just starting, their second bachelor degree

They already have a BSc, and now starting a BA...

I first asked him how come youre getting two bachs?
"So I can get a good job?"
Answering quite defensively like he gets it a lot

Then I asked how come he didnt want to get a masters or phd and he said he "didnt want to"

I personally think its retarded, who would want to be in school 8 years in a row just to have two Bachelor degrees...I mean I can see someone upgrading from a BA to a BSc to get into some graduate program but this guy is doing it in reverse

His parents are not paying for his schooling either he just has a campus job that pays an okay amount, a research one

I thought less of him after wondering what the hell he was doing with 8 years of his young life...like damn why not get a doctorate, be a doctor, do something good, its great to persue learning than ignorance...but what about the prestige, the money, and the further test of something post post secondary?

Is it just me or does this seem just proposterous to anyone else?

not really let the guy do wutever he wants, hes obviously not as stupid as u make him out to be as he did finish a bsc in the first place, he probably has everything planned out like he wants. I can see y sumbody wud do that,
A bachelor in arts wud be much easier than going for a phd.

isnt that the point exactly though? it doesnt prove anything when you get a BA when you have a BSc, getting a PHd or a masters is the next step up logically...i just dont know, would an employer consider two Bachelor degrees as an equivalent of a phd or a masters...I think not.

That is not a smart choice. I think it's a waste of time.

maybe he just wasnt into sciences, like the "my parents made me do it" kinda thing. And with that kind of attitude, he would never be able to succeed in the field of science. Maybe he is an artsy guy and wants to do what he likes now?

/shrugs i think its stupid in general to waste 8 yrs of your life with 2 pieces of paper with equal value

why would i want to date someone whos going to be in the first or second year of their second BA when im graduated, its just weird

im getting to the age where im looking to the future and want to be with someone with the same goals and views and priorities

also, even if he did suck at science...i think with a BSc you could get into most graduate programs in the liberal arts anyway without getting a BA

getting a BA after a BSc is like buying a Honda after buying a Porsche

It's stupid, if he actually thinks it will up his employability.

Very stupid. Why would you do that. Sure he has his own reasons, but it's still very stupid.

did he say what field he wanted to go into or the direction he was planning on heading? if he has a game plan and knows its relevant maybe its not sooo bad? but if he has no real idea of what he wants to do and is just doing it to add to his resume then not exactly the best plan

Sure, having both a BA and a BS will make your resume look a little "sexier." However, I doubt that this will improve his employabilty. Sadly, most employers today, for some reason, care more about work experience than academic achievements...

On a final thought, at least he is not some senior students who enroll in SFU just so that they will be buried with a bachelor's degree when they die. No offense to any senior students.

I am going to be getting a BA in Archaeology after I getting my B.Sc. in comp sci because I want to get a PhD in Paleontology because I like dinosaurs.

so youre going to be in school 10+ years, i dont understand it, its like that guy in one of those university movies van wilder or something, or was it that dumb one with tom green

So, I don't see a problem with that.

I like going to school so why should I be looked down upon for that just because you don't like going to school.

its not a problem in general, its a problem with someone id be dating when im looking to settle down

couldnt you get into an arch masters with a BSc? i know some programs will consider any degree with a little extra course here and there

I dunno, I haven't looked into it that well yet, I just know I want to get a PhD in Paleontology since that has always been the dream of the little boy inside me.

Then I asked how come he didnt want to get a masters or phd and he said he "didnt want to"
I think he meant to say, "I couldn't get into graduate school."
