retaking a course I failed.

edited April 2008 in General
This is my first semester at SFU so I didn't know the withdrawn date was so early compared to the Langara, I should have don't have my research! Anyways, I am currently failing one of my Archaeology course, I was wondering if I were to retake it next semester, my mark for that class will be replaced? I phoned in the other day, and it makes it seem like I can't? Or it is different rules for different facutly?

Thanks

Yes, you have 5 re-take slots. After that, you can't replace old marks.

    Thanks

I heard that I need to speak to my adviser regarding retaking of that course, because the computer recognizes that I took the course already and I wouldn't be able to take it again, is that true?

No, just register. The higher of the two marks will automatically be put towards your GPA. The fail will still be on your record, but it won't go towards calculating your overall GPA.

So if you did worse on your second try (for some reason), they would just discard the second mark?

Fuc*, I was going to take that course this semester...

Note to self: Stay the fuc* away from ARCH for the rest of my life, unless it is something on Egypt.

They probably will discard the second and keep the first.

Personally I don't suggest anyone take level 200 and beyond archaeology classes...unless you are trying to major in it! Anyways, thanks for the reply, I got scared the SFU gave me a half assed answer saying how the mark will stay on my transcript, but it is not taking the average...blah blah

Actually, the half assed answer did answer your question. I believed that ARCH 273 with its F will appear on your transcript along with the mark from your future attempt. However, they will only use the mark from your next attempt to calculate your CGPA.

Or in another word, that ugly F will appear on your transcript rather or not it will be used to calculate your CGPA or not.

If it transfers, it will probabaly look something like BIO-1xx F...

Oh wait, since you fail, why the fuc* would it even transfer? Silly me...

Eldon Yellowhorn is the best name for an Arch prof ever.
  • edited April 2008
if u transfer to UBC they look at both marks and average them out whereas SFU just looks at the most recent one
  • edited April 2008
so if i redo the course i failed, ubc will average both of em out wen i transfer in?
    EDIT: nvm, lol

I believe that is what Jimmy Tung just said.

arch is a bitch, I almost failed Arch 252 and its about Egypt. Memorization intensive course about useless crap.. and not even close to interesting (esp. with the monotone voice of the prof). Staying away from arch for the rest of my life.

I retook a course... first time I took it I got a C-. Then I took it again the semester afterwards and I got a A+. I was glad I retook it... I just didn't put enough effort into it the first time around and I was not satisfied from what I took away from it. The second time I REALLY learned the course material. It's an important course for my major too... a pre-req for quite a few upper division courses.

Point is... it might not be a bad thing that you need to retake a course or feel like you need to.

Oh, and I transferred credits from a post secondary institution to SFU. And I failed a course there. It doesn't show up on my transcript.

    WHAT!? 30503.jpg

ARCH-252 has got to be my favorite Archaeology Course as of right now! Also, Professor. D'Andrea is the best Archaeology professor I have so far and I did quite well in her course, I ended up getting an A- in the course. I guess having a severe obsession with Ancient Egypt does help.

Did you took the course last year in Spring 07? I was in that class too.

Yeah, I'm worried about a Sociology class I took distance ed. I am expecting at least B's in my other 3 credit classes, but the highest I think I can get in the SA is a C+..that's not good. I need at least a B-. The exam was yesterday and I am confident about it, but you never know.

I was thinking of redoing it in the fall as it is offered then...if I do potentially do bad in it, but yeah.

Oh my god, why the FUC* did you take the course in the first place? Don't you know that sure is designed to fail students? Seriously, anytime you should consult with you fellow students any time before you take a course with some sketchy name.

Fuc* that course and take something easier of you really need your Q credit.

    Overtime, you GPA will recover.

Well Duh! While I thankfully haven't make the mistake of taking Philxx1, I believe the marking of Philxx1 is so random that the Prof or TA would fail you because their coffee is not warm enough in the morning.

Basically, the purpose of the course, according to the syllabus, is to...

    -Improve the ability to reason
    -Critical, thoughtful accessment
    -Understanding and evaluating argument

But in the end, you will probably want to behead whoever came up with this course the moment you finish reading the course description and the marking criteria.
