Do I quit my job?

edited April 2008 in General
Ok, just want to know what the rest of you guys think, since you are students and can probably relate.

I go to school full-time (4 courses), which is 3 days a week, and I work part-time for 2 weekdays each week (16 hours per week).

This summer is my last semester at SFU and i couldnt be more excited. I'm taking 4 courses in the summer too. But right now, in this semester, i am feeling extremely stressed and pressed for time.

In the Fall semester, i did great! I had great marks and seemed to have enough time to do everything. But this semester, since i started working, i have no time and my marks suck so bad.

So im wondering, for the summer semester, should i just drop my job for the two days each week and use those two days to concentrate on school?

My wonderful pros and cons list:

PROS to quitting my job:
- more time to do schoolwork
- more time to enjoy life in general (cuz schoolwork won't be piling up)
- i will have some time to go out during the day and actually see the sunlight
- i will have time to workout again (God, how i miss working out!)
- i will not be nearly as stressed and won't have my mental and emotional breakdowns that i have been having over the last few weeks :(
- i might actually enjoy my last semester knowing that im not so stressed

CONS to quitting my job:
- no money coming in (even tho its not a lot right now, its still a little bit at least)
- if i quit, i know that i will wonder if i made the right choice (because of the money thing)
- no money means that i can't buy some things that i was planning on buying soon

I really dont know what to do. I could try and ask if i could just work for one day a week and then I would still be able to make a little bit of money, but i dont know if they'll agree to that (the work that is required really needs two days, not one, to get it all done).

What do the rest of you do? Most of you prolly work much more than i do and can still handle going to school full-time, but ive never been able to do that very well.

I dunno, should i just suck it up and continue working? Other people seem to be able to do it, but my bf thinks i should just focus on school since its my last semester.

My honest opinion is to quit your job and concentrate on studying.

its human nature to always want more, so w/e it is that u want right now, as soon as u get it ull want something else, so considering that as a cons isn’t really a good idea as u will always want something no matter what. if u have a job or not.

my opinion is to focus on school as in the end it "should" land u a better job than ur current one and u can therefore get w/e u want now then much quicker and make up for lost time :P

also common its going to be summer, ur friends will most likely want to go out every day/other day how can u turn them down!! ;)

Sometimes its good to change things up. Think about where you spend your money...could you change your lifestyle so that you're not wasting any money and therefore live a simpler life? It's hard to think about, but once your forced to spend money only on the necessities of life, that is when you truly realize how materialistic society has made us...and p.s. you can never go wrong by putting more effort and time into school

the last semester ive been working 32 hours a week and four classes

its all about time management, i still have time to go out, do my homework, go to the gym, drink

i mean sometimes my days are just write offs, but you learn to be more constructive if you change a few things in your habits

I will be facing this decision in a few semesters, so what I've decided to do is work quite a bit for the next few so I can relax for the last two semesters.

My suggestion is to quit your job if you can't cut down your hours. You'll be working forever, and school (for most of us anyways) symbolizes our youthful days. Enjoy it while it lasts!

Your "job" now is to complete your studies. Unless your family depends on you to raise some income for support, I think you should quit your job completely (don't even work part-time).

I know there are people out there that can do this, but this semester i just have not have any time at all!

I have no time to go to the gym....hell, i have to schedule in time just to wash my hair!

But nonetheless, good on you for being able to do it. I really wish i could, and ive been trying so hard, but it just seems to be getting harder and harder. Perhaps if i wasnt working two full 8-hour days and it was split up more, it would be easier, but thats not an option really. I had to ask for an extension today (which my prof was more than willing to give), but still, ive never asked for an extension ever on anything!

My mom says she doesnt think i should quit, but she didnt really give a reason as to why not.

I think i just have to sit and really think about this. I really want to concentrate on my last semester tho and have fun....plus, it will be summer, and i dont want to be cooped up indoors working when its sunny out and i could be reading my textbooks at the beach.

If u have the choice of living off your parents and your job isn't something you've devoted big portion of your life too, i would quit. I mean one semester probably wouldnt make much of a difference to you, will it?

I think you should quit your job, and like it's been said it's just for this semester. Since it's your last one you should enjoy it! It'd be a good way to end off, studies good with the nice weather on the mountain. Besides, your bf thinks you should quit so he can treat you every so often haha.

    ^welcome to the forums!

and to op, i think for your situation, your pros to quitting seem to outweigh the cons. school should b top priority for the time being.

personally, i know i need to work cause financially i (+ family) is gonna be screwed if i dont, so not much to consider on this front! heh

You should take some time off..or if your employer agrees maybe you could work one day a week? I'm having troubles myself deciding whether or not to quit. I work in a coffee shop and we are always understaffed, which totally sucks because I get a phone call every week to cover for some people. If I leave, then I won't get to see all my friends I've made at work. No money coming in as well, which is another thing.

Sorry for stealing your thread =P
you should probably stop working until after summer semester. It's only a couple months left too, so you can always go back to your previous job, or find an ever better job.

^ lol, you didnt steal it, its ok.

I know what you mean, but at my job, a lot of the people there are older than me, so i havent made any friends :(

I keep going back and forth on this....one day im like, "im gonna quit!", and then the next i think that i should stay.

It is gonna be my last semester, and ive been having a lot of stress issues plus other things in my life right now, and i really just cant handle this job anymore as its not making my life any easier. The best thing is to prolly quit, but yet im still hesitant about it.

I do think school is more important tho, like other people said.
