That's quite a bit of money. I'm 32k in debt. The interest is not fun. I was done like a year ago but I'm working on a designation.

Seriously?? You'd get that just for being aboriginal?

I wonder if I can forge my heritage somehow.

cant you apply for metis status then i think they get partial coverage of some programs

    yahee....free money
  • edited March 2008

I'm 1/32nd native. Anyone know if that gets me anything?

    No? A hug, maybe? Shit.
  • edited March 2008
oh sh!t...they actually have rules like that?...you gotta be X amount Aboriginal to get status? That is f*cked up. 1/4 isnt even that far back (in generations)...I can see why they would do that if it you were like 1/100 Aboriginal...but 1/4??? That means your one of your grandparents are Aboriginal..? Right?
  • edited March 2008
I get 2,000 a month from the government... just putting it out there.
  • edited March 2008
    because of Aboriginal status?
  • edited March 2008
    or just cuz? lol
  • edited March 2008
Definitely not native, of the two choices I am going to go with the later.
  • edited March 2008
haha suh-weet at least one of us is getting something good outta the govt
  • edited March 2008
yeah my grandma is full native

well my cousin is the grand chief of treaty (can't remember the number) so my grandma is going to send another application to him and get him to try and put me in... of course by the time it happens i'll be out of school probably, haha

2 grand a month eh, jeez must be nice, lol

Yay for me, no school loans to pay off when im done school! :D

As for the Native thing, if you have a status card, you can shop at Park Royal South and pay no tax on anything. I think its bullshit allowing that, but whatever i guess.

yeah, they only got raped and murdered by the whites and get their homes destroyed constantly lol

at the same time how long ago was this? how long do ancestors of each generation have to pay, and pay up? when can some people take responsibility for their own lives?

sure some people are bred into generations of alcoholism and poverty in native areas but seriously when do people have to pony up and take responsibility? what about all the poor white people also? and poor other people of other races?
  • edited March 2008
well a lot of reserves are being destroyed for oil and mining crap still, so that is current.
and they are finally starting to do something about all the residential school crap, but all they are doing is paying out money, what about the people who were beaten to death there, or were raped and ended up killing themselves because of the horrific things that occurred there.
"oh, heres 100k, too bad your friend can't get it because he was killed for speaking his language at the school"
"Heres 150k for having to go through getting raped by the white guys at the school, then having your baby thrown into a furnace right after birth"

They signed for all these things (no tax, and so on), you can't just take it away, they thought about the future and their people when they signed it.

i understand the validity in points you are making, one of my grandparents was killed in the holocaust, surely it impacted my family financially in some way

i havent seen any money, albeit it was another country that did this other than the one im living in, im not saying its neccesarily a bad thing to give them money but what about everyone else whos down trodden, why not money for all the poor people who want to go to school

For the most part, the government doesn't care about anyone, lol. If they didn't agree to the status exemptions, they sure as hell wouldn't be doing it now, lol.

No they didn't. Their distant ascestors did. And not even by my distant anscestors, who were still in Scotland fighting the British. So, my tax dollars pay for them, because someone of my skin color did something mean to something of their skin color? It's bull. It's racist bull.

    uhmm
my grandma got abused in the residential schools, and kids were raped/murdered there, murdered ones are dead obviously, but the raped victims are still alive (some of them anyways). My grandma is still alive! lol Sure they are old, but they are still here.
And theres reserves being destroyed in northern BC for oil and mining. Not as frequent, but it happens.

Your tax dollars pay for tons of shit you'll never use.

Why must my tax dollars be used for abortions when I can't even get one?!! lol

Well, the ones who were slaughtered was hundreds of years ago. The residential schools are a black mark on the country's record, but is that the same thing?

if you pay everyone who has been mistreated by one race or another youre further perpetuating differences between people...who are we kidding native racism is more prevalent than that of any other ethnicity in bc probably, kinda goes back to my other post with the groups at school, is forming groups pointing out similarities as well as differences really constructive? i mean i know were not all going to get along in some peaceful society for a long time but its an ideal

    also

dont diss abortions...triple, if you want something similar youre than welcome to go get a colon exam, free under msp ;) make use of those tax dollars bud
  • edited March 2008
I'm not dissing abortions, lol. Just using an example.

Maybe I should get a colon exam, lol
