Transferring to Business

edited April 2008 in General
howdy,

just curious to know if there are any students here who have transferred to SFU business from either another faculty at sfu, or from college.

I am currently an sfu arts student who is taking core lower-division business courses at douglas. Iv talked to academic advisors but their advice has been far from straight-forward.

Wondering if any members on this forum have any advice as to whats the best way to get accepted into business, what kind of gpa is required, will extra-cirriculars help?

thanks

I've no idea about business (some other students on this forum are business students, so they might know better), but I hear that if you're in college and in arts and transfer into business when you get to SFU, they'll penalize you 0.3 GPA points or something like that. Can anyone verify this?

If you're at SFU, you need something like 3.0 to 3.2 CGPA to sign up for upper-division business courses. I'm fairly sure extra-curricular activities have little bearing on whether or not you'll be accepted into the program.

I'm a third year Business Major..I transferred in from College so I can probably give you some tips. I hear transferring from arts you need about a 2.9 minimum and from college about 3.0-3.3...I think its closer to the high end of that range now.

They don't penalize you 0.3 GPA points, what they do is reset your GPA when you get to SFU. So you will start with a blank slate of 0. Extra curriculars, from what I know, have pretty much no bearing. It's all about your GPA and whether or not you have completed the lower division requirements. BUS 254 and 207 (Managerial Acct and Managerial Econ) are known as tough courses, so if you have not yet taken them as a part of your lower division requirements, you can wait until you get to SFU to take them so that they don't bring your GPA down.

Main thing to focus on is your GPA, make sure its up above 3.0 and you should be fine getting in. You should make an appointment with an advisor at SFU Business, they are actually quite helpful.

    Hope that helps.

I transferred from Sciences to Business this current semester. I had to apply back in November to actually get in the beginning of January. You really have to watch your GPA, especially for business because there's so much competition. I think I barely had it with 3.0 average, and depending on when you want to transfer, the GPA fluctuates as well. Usually in the fall, it raises, then lowers in the Spring and Summer. The highest its been at is 3.2...

Make sure you finish all your lower division courses for sure before you apply.

I transferred into Business from SFU Arts. I applied in the semester where I was finishing my Lower Division courses.
I think it's best to finish up your LD requirements ASAP because i've heard that gpa requirements are going up for business.

They mostly take into account your academic record and not your extracurriculars.Since you're an SFU student they won't penalize you 0.3 GPA points.
And like ToddB said, DON'T take BUS 254/BUS 207 until after you're admitted since they're considered to be challenging.

Best way to get into business is just to work hard and aim for at least a 3.0 cgpa to give yourself some space from the min. cgpa requirements

That is true. They will penalize you 0.3 GPA for admission calculation when you transfer from college. But after you have been accepted into SFU business, your GPA will be reset.

On the Faculty of Business website, it gives old GPA cutoff for college transfers (Category 2 admission) That might be helpful although i'm not sure whether or not those have already taken into account the .3 deduction in GPA. I think it does, so your college GPA would need to be around a 3.3 in order to get in with 3.0. And that's assuming admission GPA's haven't gone up, from what i've heard, they should be going up slightly...

    08-1: Category 1 -- 90%
    08-1: Category 2 -- TBA
    08-1: Category 3 -- 2.90
    08-1: Category 4 -- 2.90

    07-3: Category 1 -- 85%
    07-3: Category 2 -- TBA
    07-3: Category 3 -- 2.88
    07-3: Category 4 -- 2.88

    07-2: Cateogy 1 -- 85%
    07-2: Cateogy 2 -- 3.00
    07-2: Cateogy 3 -- 2.88
    07-2: Cateogy 4 -- 2.88

    07-1: Category 1 -- 85%
    07-1: Category 2 -- 3.00
    07-1: Category 3 -- 2.86
    07-1: Category 4 -- 2.86

    06-3: Category 1 -- 85%
    06-3: Category 2 -- 3.00
    06-3: Category 3 -- 2.86
    06-3: Category 4 -- 2.86

    thanks everyone for their input.

I am actually a category 4 student. I was accepted into the faculty of arts at sfu, attended for a year, kind of got bummed out with sfu's system so decided to go to douglas for a year. Im just finishing up my 2nd semester at douglas and am planning to come back to sfu in the summer, and hopefully get accepted into the buss faculty by fall.

In hindsight, i should have applied to the faculty of business right out of highschool. its not easy doing it this way lol.

How are you all enjoying sfu's business program? 2 thumbs up?

SFU's business program is pretty good....Try and get involved, join some clubs and think about Co Op as well - gives you great experience... I think over half of business students do Co Op.
