Surrey?

edited March 2008 in General
Whats ur guys thoughts on Surrey and ppl from there? A couple days ago I was talking to this girl I know who lives in west van and she was making it seem as surrey was the "compton" of BC except full of brown ppl. Ive noticed this with other ppl too, for example one of my profs is always crackin jokes about surrey and ppl always find it funny. lol and the worst thing is that almost every girl out there thinks that any brown guy from surrey is a "Surrey Jack". So anyone mind telling me why there are so many haters?

Stupid stereotypes...surrey has it's good parts and bad parts just like any other city. The worst of surrey is not half as bad as the worst of vancouver

yeah i live in surrey, theres a lot of white people here too
    haha
I dont think its bad here. Ive walked around whalley late at night and felt way more safe than I would on hastings at night.

Anyways, theres Indian people everywhere haha
Richmond has a lot, but never hear about them.

It has a bad name, but I'm in more of the Langley area so it's pretty good. Away from Whalley for sure.

I don't really get what people have against Surrey. With the residential housing burst, there are some really, really cute neighborhoods that I can see myself in within the next little while.

but Nicole thats out in the booonies!
  • edited March 2008
Hmm...I wouldn't really call Langley the boonies. I would say Chilliwack fits that stereotype a little better...Langley is building a little city out of itself. It's really not that bad!
  • edited March 2008
It's true, I've lived in Langely (well... Aldergrove) for a good eight years before moving on and my family lives out there now. Langely is definitely a cool place and not the boonies or a hick town. That's Chilliwack.

now arent u guys generalizing about chilliwack, over time it might just get the same kinda boom langley had
  • edited March 2008
They sure could, but I think we're talking in the moment.

I had to spend a month out in Chilliwack last summer... it sucked.

I don't have any negative thoughts about surrey. I just view it as a boring place.
  • edited March 2008
Yeah, that's my opinion too. I don't go to Surrey much though.

I might go there more if it wasn't so damn far away (from North Van).

The ironic thing is that there is so much more to do in and around the Surrey campus than on the Burnaby campus...
  • edited March 2008
meh i try to stay north of the river
  • edited March 2008
yaa the burnaby campus can be soo boring at times. The surrey one on the other hand has a mall, better places to eat at, and a bunch of other stuff to do inbetween classes when ur not in the mood to study.

I personally have had some horrible experiences in Surrey... so unless you want my biased opinion...

    Hahaha.

ive had bad experiences in surrey too, walking between parties one night near 132 and 60-70 and guys pulling over yelling stuff at me, i felt very unsafe, this happened on more than one occasion, i wasnt even dressed slutty

Oh give me a break. If you're scared about guys yelling stuff at you, and if you're blaming that entirely on Surrey...puh-leeze. It happens everywhere.

not true. it didn't happen at our meet up.

It's true... however after the meet-up when I left BP there was a bunch of people outside the doors just standing there and it looked like they were waiting for me, I was scared.

I had people yell at me in Richmond... then 5 minutes after some woman flashed me... so it ended up a pretty good night, i was 15 at the time, haha

I've been living in Surrey for the past 8-9 years and I haven't come across anything "negative" or "dangerous". Every city has its share of idiots. Oh, and I've heard all sorts of stereotypes about Surrey, and most aren't even true.

Sorry if you guys had some bad experiences.

    I live near there :)
Also I have had enough bad experiences with surrey to not be a huge fan of it.

Anyway, among other things, I have learnt that it is inadvisable to walk through creepy places on king george at night time with valuable items on you, if you want to keep said items and not get threatened by crazypeople on the street who may or may not have weapons!

(Of course, this sort of thing can happen anywhere, I probably have some better examples though...

lol i live near there too and ive never had a bad experience there. ive taken my dog for walks down 132 at around 10-11 pm and id say its a pretty safe area.

    Nothing ironic about that.
Burnaby campus is on ... surprise.. a MOUNTAIN

You're comparing the campus at city centre to a campus that's 1200 feet above sea level.

Ether posted that there was nothing to do on this side of the bridge, but changed the post...doesn't make much sense now ;)
  • edited March 2008
Ether probably didn't post that because Ether is not sure which side of which bridge is being referred to.
