Are most hk sfu students rich?

edited February 2008 in General
Hi, I am wondering if H.K. students studying at SFU are rich/middle-class/or so so..?

sorry I am asking a dumb question but I am not from SFU.

My friend from SFU told me most of his HK classmates are middle-class. Even if they drive to school-they are driving their family's car. and some of them just can't afford to buy another car and just take the bus to school. I am from HK but I am not studying at SFU.

i am an hk student and i live with my parents, we are hanging at the edge of poverty, hows that sound to you?

Are you refering to international students from Hong Kong or Chinese Canadian from Hong Kong? I belong to the latter group and let me tell you this...

1.) I am currently staying in residence right now even though I can drive (to a degree) and live in Richmond.
2.) My parents are perfectly ok with me being a History/ Humanities major even though I will probably be making only $45,000 a year if I live through this.
3.) I am going on vacation in the summer.

Do I sound poor to you?

not rich, but most like to show off. Culture thing... you'll see many driving late model expensive imports but rent the crappiest apartment. Some are close to being broke but will buy a wallet for $300 and so on...

That is not to say that some aren't rich. Well... none of them are, some parents are well off.

simply put, the students themselves are not rich.

instead, they were powered by mom and dad.

LOL $45k a year with your history/humanities major? I sure hope you don't expect that as intro with those degrees
Unless of course, you have massive connections. In that case, I hate you :(

Actually, I was looking at the recruiting pamplet of the RCMP and it said on there that as a regular member, the salary at engagement is $44,513. With the amount of RCMP retiring or getting fired due to scandals, do you know what this mean to me? Job opportunities!

Scandals? Very few of them, especially relating directly to police work. Aside from that electrocuted Polak at Vancouver International, I can think of few allegations of police brutality. The cops here do a much better job than they do in the US.

Now, the number of officers retiring is more or less steady: there will always be people retiring and there will always be people being hired as a result. The pay isn't bad, especially once you've worked there for a while. The thing with the RCMP is that you could be stationed anywhere in Canada. Imagine living anywhere in Saskatchewan or Manitoba or an industrial town in Ontario :omg:

Its actually pretty hard to get in I heard. The physical requirements aside, this came up during my friend's interview process

My friend was asked if he or know of any friends that smoke marijuana or other illegal drugs/narcotics. My friend said he was at a party where a friend of his was smoking marijuana. The interviewer asked if he left the party after finding out about it, and my friend said he didn't. This led to him being deferred in the interview process for a year.

    Moral of the story?
um... there isn't one. But at least now you're prepared for one of their uh.. traps, sort to speak.

For the VPD they have lie detector tests (I don't know if it's occasional or not). But my ex got in regardless...and he's done some pretty hard drugs, so I don't know how he passed that.
I know that volunteer hours are huge for the VPD (as in basically volunteering like it's a part-time job in relation to how many hours you are recommended to put in per week), but the interviewing process is definitively one to watch out for.

my cousin applied for the RCMP too, he didnt lie during the interview and got deferred for three years for doing marijunana once a year prior

Definitely, we are much better than the LAPD. I know that there are few scandals in the RCMP, however I am using scandals and resignation, as well as retirement, as one of the ways new opening in the RCMP are created.

Related to LAPD, I actually want to spend some time with the LAPD so I get to deal with some hardcore LA gang war stuff.

I am cool with any part of Canada except Quebec. I am not learning French!

I am not very social and very conservative, so I don't have to worry about this.

Why would he even think about being an RCMP officer if he done drugs such a short while ago? Don't he know that he should get clean the moment he considers becoming an officer.

It's all really a matter of how the parents teach their children. I was taught to be conservative, but not to an extreme. To answer your question, I would say it pretty much evens out to both "yes" and "no". Some are born rich, and some live an average life.

i always thought they said no drugs for one year then its fine.
    Well for MJ anyways.
I thought about trying to be a cop once... but with all the drugs, I doubt they'd let me in.
Who knows, in the next couple of years they may need a lot and be less strict, lol.

Why would I want to? I like my room and my house.

    to become independent? no?
  • edited January 2008
i'm in the same boat as vonnie.. and quite proud of it actually even though i don't have the ability get my own place.. there are perks to that but independent doesn't mean you have to be living apart from your parents.. i pay my own bills.. tuition fee.. entertainment.. food and the textbooks.. to some degree that is being independent..

well on second thought.. maybe not as rich as vonnie.. i can't afford $300 boots.. o.O" but i am willing to pay that for jeans.. *blushes* hehehe.. =P

yeah... not the same thing. closer but not there yet.

$300 for jeans? Isn't that arguably worse than boots? :P
Beyonds my jerseys, I think the most expensive piece of clothing I own is a nice winter jacket that was originally in the mid 200s which I found at the clear out rack for quite the discount :)
