kicked out what are my options

edited December 2007 in General
so i was put on probation last semester and after seeing my first class mark this semester looks i won't be above 2.0

it is painfully obvious that i am gonna get kicked out.

is there any way i can talk to the dean or will they just mail me a letter and tell me that i am kicked out.

what are my other options besides this.

i don't think talking helps. you can try but i highly doubt it. my friend got kicked out, she went to college for 1 semester and was able to come right back in. other than that i'm not sure what you can do....

They will mail you a letter telling you that you are on RTW (required to withdraw) status and provide you with information on how to get back in

Go to college for a semester or two and get good grades. The more credits you take at college, the lower the GPA requirement to get back in

I don't know of many other options but if you had a tragic experience (ie. death of a family member) during the semester, which may have affected your studies, then they might consider it. It's a longshot though

I was required to withdraw a while ago. Of course that was the registrar's F'ING FAULT, but that's another story. :) Point is: talking will do nothing.

I went to Douglas for 2 semesters, got the GPA I needed and transferred back. It was all very painless, and the classes I took tranferred directly into SFU class credits, so I didn't even lose too much time. Of course, that became moot when I switched my major. :p

Point is: go to college, button down, get back in, move on. This is an 8 month setback max, and perhaps not a setback at all if you manage to get transferrable courses at Douglas. In the end, I was happy it happened. It was a wake up call for me to put more effort into school, and I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. I like the college atmosphere.

    Moral: Don't freak out. :)

Here are the credit-GPA requirements you'll need to get in college to be elligable for readmission to SFU:
    12-17 units with a minimum 3.50 GPA
    18-23 units with a minimum 3.00 GPA
    24-29 units with a minimum 2.75 GPA
30 or more units with the acceptance GPA

First of all, what is your semester gpa and what is your cumulative gpa. It makes a difference. Post both from last semester and this semester.

Second of all, your an idiot. If you had joined the forum earlier we coulda helped you pass your classes.

Thirdly, once you get kicked out it's pretty hard to get back in. PM me if you are serious and actually wanna know a trick that might get you back in.
  • edited December 2007
and i've heard people end up just straight transferring to another educational institution as a whole eg. straight into UBC if that's you're goal

just make sure your Cgpa is below 2.0 = withdrawal

How would joining this forum help him pass his classes?? There isnt that much advice on here to help someone pass their classes, they have to do it by themselves.

Anyways, Ive never been in this situation, but my friend has. She just decided to go to college and i dont think she has any desire to come back to SFU.

There are a lot of students who've asked questions here when they are having trouble with specific things in class (ie. an assignment or an exam). I think the forum could be even more helpful if all the students that needed help actually asked. For example, if this guy was doing bad in his class he coulda asked things like... "i have an essay due this week, and here are some of the comments from the last one, do you have any suggestions for improvement?" you may not agree but it coulda helped prevent him from getting kicked out

    and yea...university isn't for everybody

Dude, sometimes time off is a good thing. Take at least a semester off to think about what you wanna do with your life and where you want to be 5 or 10 years from now. There's obviously reasons that you did so bad in your first year. To be honest, I don't think you should have gotten kicked out because I know a lot of people who have done worse in consecutive semesters. Your only biggest mistake was screwing up the first semester, because that dragged you back. At least go talk to an advisor at school, maybe there's something you can do. Don't lose sight of the fact that a university education is very important and you worked your whole life to get here.

will changing faculties make a difference, i'm in currently in bachelors of science so will asking to be put into bachelors of arts or some other program won't help me stay?
  • edited December 2007
no, regardless of faculty/program if u are oap and cant keep 2.0 the following semester, u get rtw designation, simple as that

if u want to continue schooling and whatnot, u need to look into the colleges and transferable credits, applications, and stuf like that

Actually, engineering is at 2.4 I think.

If I were you, I'd go to BCIT, take a semester there and then come back. It's much easier to transfer back since many of their programs have equivalent credits to the ones offered at SFU.

That was the worst advice ever. None of the BCIT courses transfer over to SFU because it is not the same type of school. My friend went there for 2 years before the academic advisors at SFU told him that he wouldn't get credit for any of the classes he completed there.

I would honestly go talk to an academic advisor at school, just call them and make an appointment. Once your out, it takes a while to get back in because you'll have to go to college and get a high gpa (which could be higher than your original admission gpa).

    Engineering is 2.4
    Criminology is 2.25
    Computing Science is 2.0

^ Comp Sci is 2.4, no?
  • edited December 2007
Seriously tho, what happened?? You were only taking three courses right? I hate to say it, but you really should have worked hard if you knew you might get kicked out if your grades this semester were low.

Nevertheless, maybe take some time off to clear your head and think about what you really want to do....maybe work for a while. College is prolly your best bet and you can just work really hard there and then maybe come back to SFU. Good luck tho with whatever you choose.
  • edited December 2007
Nay, computing science requires a minimum of a 2.0.
  • IVTIVT
    edited December 2007
^when did that happen? Last time I checked it was 2.4.
If it is 2.0 then i'm ok because macm screwed me over. I don't know if I could pull 2.4...
  • edited December 2007
you can get admitted to SFU with a GPA of 2.0 for general arts...so its like just pass your classes at college and bam youre back in, theres a website bctransferguide look that up on yahoo, itll show you courses that are transferable and their transfer equivalent

Don't judge me on this, but I think it's right that you did get kicked out. Hear me out first!!! Being kicked out will hopefully force you to seriously analyse your situation: why did you do so badly? What contributed to this? Is there a way to improve it? What can you do about it? How can you increase your productivity? And ultimately, is university for you?

Sooner or later these questions will be asked by anyone serious enough about getting back in. If you are such a person, then you will find resolution and certainly you will grow as an individual. We all make mistakes, but please do not go on this forum posting about how badly you got it. We all got it bad at some point in our lives. Don't make yourself out to be a victim; rather, take a step back, examine your life, and ask yourself the relevant questions. You obviously made decisions that contributed to you doing so badly in university; now take responsibility for those decisions and do the best you can while dealing with their consequences.

Kevin's advice about taking time off is excellent. Sometimes you just need it either to deal with any issues you have. Had you not been kicked out, you'd probably continue making the mistakes you did. Time off will help you grow. Work for a while and arrive at the realization that a university education is your ticket out of menial, blue-collar labour. Or go to a college, since working towards the goal of getting back into university will prepare you for the work that is required when you eventually re-enrol. Either way, you're not totally fucked.

And sure there's a way to get back in (I already mentioned it). Go to college and work your hardest there.

    Here you go kicked.

    http://www.bctransferguide.ca/

Everything is speculation unless you've looked at this website -- before transferring to SFU from college (fresh from high school and knew nothing about credits, gpa's or anything) I checked this site everyday.

    EVERYDAY.

I think I was a bit obsessive, but it proved very useful in the end.

Just remember that it's not the end of the world. When in college, the majority of the people I met had no intention of staying in college (wanted to transfer) -- that was my motivation.

Also not true. Once you get kicked out the requirements to get back in are much higher, ie. 3.0 and above depending on how quickly you are planning on coming back.

    behold the official quote:
Former students who are required to withdraw (RTW) will be eligible for readmission if they complete further transferable academic work according to the following schedule (any of the following five options):

    * · 12-17 credit hours with a minimum 3.50 GPA
    * · 18-23 credit hours with a minimum 3.00 GPA
    * · 24-29 credit hours with a minimum 2.75 GPA or with the acceptance GPA,* whichever is higher
    * · 30 or more credit hours with the acceptance GPA*
    * · a completed 2 year technical diploma with a 70% minimum average and at least 12 credit hours of transferable course work with a minimum 2.75 GPA. (The transferable work may be within the diploma program or supplementary to it.) http://students.sfu.ca/calendar_archive/01.02%20calendar/General_Regs5.html
how many total credits do you have so far? read the section about extended withdrawal
