Conservatism in BC

edited December 2007 in General
Did anyone read that article in the province today?

Apparently people in BC are highly 'strict moralists' according to the province in some polls they somehow took. It really surprised me when they said BC was the most conservative in their definition of strict moralists. Then I thought what is the rest of BC like outside of Vancouver? I know prince george was a conservative hick town, where goths would get beat up, let alone gays or other minorities that didnt exist in the town.

Somehow they came up with the stat that 1% of canada approves of pedophilia also...

Yeah... your views on PG are wrong... I've lived there for four years and it is not anything like that definition of yours.

I know Kamloops, another town I've lived in for a few years, is fairly Conservative (compared to the rest of the province).

well i lived in pg i dont know when you did, but it was a piss ant hick town when i was there, nothing but drugs, drinking and teens trying to act tough

True, but that doesn't make it a conservative town where minorities get beat up.

What high schools did you go to? I went to PGSS and I noticed a lot of openly gay kids were harassed. I saw goth kids get harassed in the spruceland area for dressing how they did then get chased away. Was my experience anyway maybe it wasnt typical but I know some people who agree

I just want to ask who wouldn't be a moralist in this dark time? Sure, I am not anti-subculture and a homophobia, and I am Asian. However, there are certain sets of social norms that I believe we should all follow to better our society. We should have manners in public and certain acts should not be practiced in public even if it is a part of freedom of expression. Cannabis store should not operate openly and safe injection site should discourse drug use as well as providing a safe place to inject drugs.

I do feel very unwelcomed when I went fishing with my dad in Kamloops. Note: We are Asians.

A few weeks ago, the Vancouver Sun (Same Company) published an article about how most people have sex outside of marriage or sex before marriage. I dont think that is conservative.

This province is fairly right-wing even under NDP governments, I've noticed.

As for pedophilia and 1%? You'll always get a tiny minority that thinks some social taboo is their kink.

Consider how many people think Elvis is still alive if you're wondering what people will believe.

I remember my mom told me a story of when she went to Dryden in Ontario. Big aboriginal population there.
She was in the wal-mart (yes, a town of 6000 has a wal-mart, haha) and she has her status but she looks white (1/2 aboriginal). The cashier (white woman) was all friendly with her until she brought her status card out so she wouldn't get taxed. The cashier's attitude changed completely, and she pretty much turned into a bitch. lol

anyways, duno what relevance this has, but hey, it's there :P

ok my high school reference wasnt a good one

how about how there is the davie village area where a large amount of the population is openly gay, nothing like that would ever exist in prince george or many other small towns, or even like goth kids walking down the street would be ridiculed in prince george, most people downtown wouldnt take a second look, but i guess downtown is a more adult oriented population so maybe my assumptions are off base altogether
