No one cares about politics

Do you agree or disagree with this quote?
“People don’t believe in political parties anymore; they don’t believe in anyone,” said Stalin González, a leader of the student protests here.

“The students are fresh new figures with a different message,” he said. “This doesn’t mean we’re the salvation.”
Little bit of background: Hugo Chavez is the president of Venezuela and he recently held a referendum which would allow him to continue as president for his whole life if he so chooses. People were afraid that his Socialist government was moving closer to a dictatorship, so 51% voted against the proposed changes in the constitution. A lot of students are against Chavez in Venzuela, which is the point of this article

What I'm wondering is...does our generation really not care about politics?

No generation has cared about politics. This is the central misunderstanding that underlies most of the "sky is falling" messages we hear about society. YES, the stats are generally depressing about people's mentality, beliefs, interests, etc. What's important to remember is that they've never been any better. Old-asses love to romanticize the past, but the fact is that people were NOT smarter/stronger/more moral fifty years ago. They just weren't. The list of things that are actually getting worse is quite small. It exists, but it's short. The thing is, a lot of interest isn't. Which is to say, it may SEEM like there was a lot of interest in politics in the sixties, but all that anti-war stuff wasn't interest in politics, it was interest in the romance of being a protester. They knew next to nothing about the war, because the war wasn't what they really cared about. Same goes for the anti-Iraq people today. 95% of them don't care about politics, they just like the idea of being pissed at the man.

Hugo Chavez is a prick, a facist and an oppressive dictator. People who support him annoy the hell out of me. I mean, do you REALLY not know the story of the Soviet Union? Remember all the people who went to the USSR and came back saying "I have seen the future, and it works"? Remember those people? Those people who praised the Soviets as the world's best country, even as two MILLION people died of starvation and exposure? Sean Penn goes and gets the five star treatment, comes back and spouts off about how great Chavez is. Idiot.

As I said in a previous posting why does voting even matter if all the choices embrace the same political philosophy...ie democracy compared to socialism or fascism.

Look at that David Emerson crap...how is it that a liberal can be a conservative and nothing even change...? He said he can better serve his constituents with his minister seat. Regardless of people wanting a liberal candidate he went against it. During that entire thing I wondered why people were calling Belinda Stronach a whore and a power slut, yet David Emerson was never called a political whore.

In Canada anyway I don't think anyone who isnt super rich gives a damn because it doesn't matter in the end anyway, if you can buy yourself tax breaks and powers sure you should care otherwise whatever.

And growing up we all watch American news channels, I think I know a lot more about American politics than I do Canadian...I dont even like watching Canadian channels cause the programming is boring, they should make Canadian affiliates of the american super stations
