Why are Mario and Luigi Italian?

I was playing Mario Kart Double Dash today and I started wondering why would a Japanese Nintendo company make their characters Italian? Lol :)

    Cause theyre plumbers, and I guess white italians are stereotypically plumbers

    they didn't want to put their own race as plumbers since the job isn't exactly seen as a "impressive and successful" notion since the japs are always striving to be the best.
