How often do you work out / hit the gym?

edited November 2007 in General
In the summer when I was taking a semester off I went about 6-7 days a week, not to get bulky but to just tone and be in good health.

Now that I'm in school, trying to study, go to school, work, and maintain a social life it seems hard to fit that hour or so in, and now I only go like 2-4 times a week.

I don't want to end up one of those people who die of heart disease or who end up unable to walk and need assistance all the time when they are elderly

lol. You go to the gym 2-4 times a week and fear dying of heart disease? Give yourself a break, man. If you die of high blood pressure, it'll be from stress, not fitness.

Being toned is not synonymous with being healthy. Some people have to seriously diet in order to look ripped while others can pull it off naturally (it's all genetically predetermined). A guy can have 13% body fat and actually be more healthy than someone with 6% body fat; some can eat a lot of carbohydrates and not get fat while others must have controlled diets in order to maintain appearance (age aside).

Ultimately, it's always better to go for the health benefits rather than to enhance your appearance. However, I find that when I go, my appearance always improves simply because of my genes (genetically I'm taller and leaner). Of course there are others who have better genes than I do but I don't envy them.

If you're trying to get healthy, it's good to go about four times weekly from one to one-and-a-half hours. When you're healthier, you can go less (but go at least three times weekly even for 45 minutes a session just to maintain). Your workout should include a healthy mixture of cardio, weights, and stretching (this can do wonders in preventing injuries). I've known people who spent aroudn four hours in the gym for four to five times a week simply because they felt it would help them improve their appearance. Don't do this, I don't endorse this. Health should always take precedence over appearance and if appearance interferes with health, always go with health.

i combine it with healthy eating, but healthy eating alone doesnt keep your appearance up

Just to let you know, while being active is good, going to the gym every day is not as there is a point of diminishing return. After working so hard you need to let your body rest that is how you get stronger. When you work out you rip the fibres in your muscles apart and you kill cells so when you rest you build stronger fibres and you build cells that can handle more.

For myself, I am not so much in the gym very often but I am very active as I am on the rowing team. We have four water practises per week right now, and three dry land. The dry lands consist of one dynamic-core work out, one run and one erg.

I am also snowboarding a few times a week.

I go twice a week only. When I go back to school next semester, I hope to get some friends together and play tennis, basketball, etc. occasionally.

Twice a week is good to keep you in the same situation. You will not get bigger and stronger but you will not get fatter and weaker which is what you want.
