GPA Boosters

edited September 2010 in General
I'm just finishing what I believe to be that hardest semester i've ever had at sfu. And i feel that I deserve an easier semester for Spring 08. Can anyone recommend any either:

A) Courses that are challenging but u get a good mark
B) Courses that are easy and get good mark?

A course that fulfills the B-Hum requirement would also be good.

Fank you!

if your good at memorizing, crim 101, 103, 104, 131 are easy, just write down what you read

stats-203 is like math 12, but easier, if you took high school in BC.

health science 140 is a joke. for the midterm the class makes up the questions. he picks like 30 or so from them, so you know all the questions and asnwers ahead of time. everyone i know that took it got like 98% overall.

    agree with crim 101 too.

I personally would stay clear of any stats courses if I was interested in boosting my gpa :shade:

well, if your good at math it is easy, lol.
    i missed my mid-term and i got a B, haha

May I recommend Arch 252: Ancient Egypt and Africa. As long as you got good memorization and have an interest in Egyptian History, this course is great for you.

I got an A- in that class.

I said it before and I'll say it again: there is no such thing as a GPA booster.

You think you can just take an easy class and raise your grade and all will be well? It's not that simple my friend. A class can appear to be easy and then you get an asshole professor who doesn't like you or his/her grading scheme is not in accordance with your studying habits or something or the assignments in the class are essays (and maybe you suck at writing). Don't trust that shit and just work hard in every class (create your own GPA boosters if you will), end of story.

I am going to have to agree with that class. I found phys-101 a "grade booster" for me as it was a joke to me but to most people I doubt it would be.

Same here for CMPT 165. I found it painfully easy. *Somebody* even brought a Staples "easy button" to the final exam.

I recommended it to a few friends from high school but they found it really difficult. Don't ask me how..
  • edited November 2007
why not just retake a course you've taken since you already know everything you should be able to get an A
you can do that right, lol

What do you do in that course anyways? I'm looking for an easy science course, and I'm basically stuck between this, kin 140 and Psyc x99. I absolutely HATE science and math haha. Any help would be awesome

There's no science or math in CMPT 165. It's XHTML, CSS, and basic web programming. If you can write HTML, you can pass the course. If you can comprehend basic "if *blank* then *blank*" conditional statements, then you can probably get an A in the course.

I have an idea. Take the lower level courses in your major if you are particulary good at your major. That's what I plan to do in History if all else fails, screw honor and respect.

do you think taking cmpt 165 by distance education is a good idea vs. taking it up on campus?

that depends on your study style and discipline.. and whether u need someone to regurgitate stuf u might already know how to do

the material itself is definitely easy enough that u can do it all at home w/o much help

Has anyone taken KIN 143, I heard its pretty easy and you get to run and play sports for tutorials.

CMNS110 distance ed is working out to be a good GPA booster for me, but as with all courses, it varies from person to person. If you can put together a decent essay, then this course should be fine.

I'm looking for an easy B-Sci course as well. CMPT165 seems to be the way to go, but I can't decide between distance ed or taking it on campus...
  • edited November 2007
Have to agree, i felt CMPT165 through distance ed was easy as well. exactly what Ether said above.
  • edited November 2007
do you guyz think it would be okay to take the distance ed. CMPT 165 cause the ones offered on campus have three lectures a week. by the way im ok with computers meaning ms word, excel powerpoint, not so much making websites though. also could someone suggest an interesting or somewhat easy humanaties course. thanks
  • edited November 2007
Well, 165 has nothing to do with microsoft office.

Read this page. Specifically, the 3 tutorials on the top left: HTML, XHTML, and CSS.

I estimate that covers just over half the course. I don't know for sure because I only went to a few of the classes and played games on my laptop when I did go.

Anyways, if you can follow those tutorials with no trouble, take it by correspondence. If you need someone to teach you, don't do distance ed.

I"m taking CMPT165 by distance ed right now, and it's really easy.
You get this study guide book, and each chapter you read you have an exercise or an assignment.
If you read the study guide and do all the exercises, you'll definitely get a good mark.
Oh yeah, each exercise takes 10 minutes tops, and assignments take longer (but they're worth more so that makes sense; it's like 5 small exercises put together)
  • edited November 2007
Don't forget to actually do the assignments though.

I completely forgot to do one assignment. -10% right there. That caused me to go from an A+ to a B+ and all it would have taken was 30 minutes of time.

BTW, Did you go to STA Vonnie?
  • edited November 2007
uh... Yes. How do you know?
  • edited November 2007
I know because you were in my class.

How much does CMPT 165 cover?
I already have a pretty good knowledge of XHTML/CSS and know a reasonable amount of JS , and PHP/mysql
  • edited November 2007
If you even know what those terms mean before starting, you will just destroy that course. Seriously, the first assignment was like.. "make a single web page using xhtml and css".

Yeah, I am also taking CMPT 165 by distance ed right now...but I don't feel the same way as you vonnie or you Ether.

I find this course very difficult, I think I have spent more time on this course than I have on any other thing. Sometimes it takes me an entire day to do an assignment or exercise. For example, last week, for Exercise 4, I spent FIVE HOURS trying to debug ONE TINY PROBLEM in my Python program, absolutely ridiculous! I feel that there is so much to learn in the course in such a small amount of time, because coupling it with all the other things you have to do and courses you are taking was a big mistake for me. The main reason I took it was for the B-Sci credit, but I also wanted to take it because I do have a strong interest in computers and I really wanted to learn how to make webpages, which I did. One good thing that came from this course though was I learned a TREMENDOUS amount, more then I ever thought I would, about computers and the Internet and programming, etc. It's all quite fascinating to me but at the same time I find it very difficult.

I think another reason though WHY I find it so difficult is because I am taking it by distance-ed, which is not my style and I have NEVER gotten an e-mail response back from the prof whenever I have asked him something, which is definately NOT my style either. The TA's are quite helpful though and easy markers.

Also, when I looked up the professor on RateMyProfessor.com, some people, actually, many people, described this course as NOT being suit for a first year course and some people even said it was harder than second-year calculus, which somewhat amazes me.

So, from what I say I don't recommend taking it distance ed unless you can do that sort of thing.

Also, vonnie how are you doing on Assignment 4? I started it today and its gonna be hectic.

Haha, shoot. I'm taking it Distance Ed next semester. First DE course and I need it as an external requirement as well, so not necessarily something I'm particularly interested in.
I was also planning on taking four courses on campus, but maybe I'll have to reconsider that if it's as much work as you say it is!
