A question about my computer...

edited November 2006 in General
So, I used to follow this kinda stuff, but not anymore cos... cos it just got too complicated, but anyhow...

I wanna get a new video card... but I don't know if it's PCI or pci-e or agp or what?

I have a radeon 9800 pro, that's all I know...
otherwise my computer is pretty okay @

3700+ AMD
1,5gb ram
150+250gb hdd...
etc etc...

so, what kinda of slot do I have for my video card, and if I want, what kind of motherboard should I change to, and how do I know what motherboard i have now? I THINK it's a 939, but I'm not 100% sure...

thanks

you are prob running an s939 ddr400 with agp video card, 9800 pro is agp only

if u are lookin to upgrade, it depends on what u plan to do, unless u game, u really dont need to

but if u do, u will most likely hav to get a new system, for amd 939 is being phased out and replaced by am2, ddr memory is replaced by ddr2, agp with pci-e

most of the amd stuf cant compete with intel's new line of core 2 duo cpus, look into building a system around that, e6600 is a nice pricepoint and is better than most of the amd stuf out

if u are looking to just plain upgrade ur current system, ur pretty much near the end of the line im afraid, u get get a cpu upgrade, a vid card upgrade, but i dont think its worth it

    you're in my boat basically

i need a new vid card, but every good one is PCI-e, which our mother board doesnt support

and the cost to buy a new motherboard and all the effort , might as well buy the new core2duo processors especially since we use it for gaming.

    im getting..

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor E6300
    Intel® Desktop Board DG965WH
    Microsoft* Windows Vista* Ultimate

    220$ USD

now to find the case + hard drive

    I say fuck vista... =)
there's probably nothing special about it, except a little bit faster for gaming than xp... and if you got xp, it's good enough anyway...

honestly, I don't think I'm gonna upgrade, because the only games I play are ones that don't use a lot of power anyway...

    right now I'm playing...

    CS1.6
    Pro evolution soccer
    and NHL 07...

btw, if anyone knows where to even start finding clans to join for CS1.6, tell me, I used to play in top 50 teams in Finland and I'd really love to get back to playing a little more seriously... thanks :)

dont think you understand 64bit processing ( vista )
it's actually BETTER for us gamers

basically what we have now are single core, so if we run ONE game, we run ONE virus scan, ONE defrag, ONE cd writing etc, it takes up like 90% of our system resources

whereas core 2 duo has two, so you can run two large resource hogging applications. eg. burn a dvd + full screen 3d game without any choppy etc, where you couldn't do on single core as well
