declaring a major

edited November 2007 in General
i know that the crim and psych department requires you to declare a major once you hit the third year courses.. but recently i've been told that most, if not all faculties at SFU are adopting this requirement too.. can someone verify this for me? =\

and on the side note.. how do you declare a major? @_@

for crim we had to have all the lower level requirements done + 60min credits before we can declare. The process itself was simple enough. We had to print out our transcript sorted by courses I believe and go in to see the department counselor

I'd imagine its much of the same actual process with perhaps different requirements for different departments. Just check the department website once this is adopted

For me, I've had my major declared since I came to university... I don't know how that worked.

What faculty are you in? I thought you have to have your lower division requirements done BEFORE you can declare a major...

In my advising transcript from go.sfu.ca it says "Major-Computing Science". And that was there since I came to university too.

Same here. When I got accepted to SFU they sent 2 letters: one for the university, one for the school of computing science. I guess if you apply to a specific program, they automatically declare that to be your major.

i got into uni without really thinking about a major till now.. i spent most of my first year exploring and taking courses that seem to interest me.. =\ so i guess i should start thinking abt that..

@kevin: i'm actually not in any faculty yet.. but i am taking a bunch of crim lower division courses... i've taken some business ones too and kind of like it..

I guess the question becomes...which do you like better? Business or Crim? I would say Business but I don't really know you, so just take a brake and think about what you'd rather do for the rest of your life. Do whatever you like more...and keep in mind that you have no work experience in either one.

From my understanding of the calendar, you must declare a major once you reach 60 credits. In theory, declaring a major can get you into upper level courses easier. In reality, it doesn't.

You declare a major by visiting the academic advisor. Is that not a little too obvious?
