Ways to stay active in the winter

edited October 2007 in General
I spent all summer playing recreational hockey, basketball, and even a bit of running, but now that the weather's becoming crummy, no one really gets together anymore. What's a good way to stay healthy and active over the winter? I hesitate to start skiing or ice skating because you just seem to glide around whereas I'd rather put in some effort. Any suggestions?

I snowboard three or four days a week, that's a highly core intensive workout. I row four or five mornings a week, that's a highly intensive work out. Other than that I got nothing. Go to a gym and do indoor sports.

Dude, who says you can't go running in the winter? Just throw on a hoody and go. You'll love the burning cold air in your lungs...seriously though, you get used to it as your body warms up. Or just keep hitting the gym, thats what I do. 5 days a week, one body part per day and a little bit of cardio and abs if I have the time.

I agree with Kevin M.! I think running in the cold is really refreshing, wakes you up in the morning.
something I picked up recently is skipping. i really like it because sometimes when I've been spending too much time studying and I feel like doing something active in between (but don't want to trek all the way to gym), I pick up my jump rope and start skipping. I started to get really fast at it after about a week and it's also kinda fun to see how long you can go for. I wish i could skip like those boxers though :(

Try just walking on icy pathways. Just trying to stay upright burns a crapload of energy, heh. :P
