Accounting salaries: education with little experience

edited October 2007 in General
I've seen alot of Accounting jobs for inexperienced people in BC that pay like high 20k to low 30k. This just seems so brutal for a field that requires education.
Mid 30k just seems so low considering what people in different professions are making these days.

What should people be looking at as a minimum for 1.5 years experience and a business degree? I myself would settle for no less than 40k or $20/hr at this point.

You should realize that these accounting jobs can be easily outsourced to other countries that can do 10x better accounting, 10x more efficient, and 10x cheaper.

Honestly I don't think one needs that much education to do arithmetic.

When my friend had no degree and had around that much experience he made about 35k per year. When he was complete with his degree in accounting at SFU he began making 45k per year. He recently completed his Chartered Accountant designation and his salary will be projected at 75k per year once they grant him the charter.

    Thanks for your response.

Do you know how long it took your friend to move from the 45k to the 75k mark?
I would expect your friend worked mainly in public practice doing articling. Do you know what he/she was doing before articling?
