UF Student gets tasered at John Kerry forum

edited September 2007 in General
I didn't really know where to put this since it's not really "fun" stuff, but it is a video.

the video is difficult to see, but seriously just watch the whole thing--the police are pretty relentless.

GAINESVILLE - U.S. Sen. John Kerry's speech at the University of Florida came to a dramatic close Monday, shortly after a vocal audience member was hauled off by police and shot with a Taser gun.

The audience member was preliminarily identified by UF officials as Andrew Meyer, a UF student in the College of Journalism and Communications.

Toward the conclusion of Kerry's UF forum, Meyer approached an open microphone at the University Auditorium and demanded Kerry answer his questions. The student claimed that University Police Department officers had already threatened to arrest him, and then proceeded to question Kerry about why he didn't contest the 2004 presidential election and why there had been no moves to impeach President Bush.

A minute or so into what became a combative diatribe, Meyer's microphone was turned off and officers began trying to physically remove him from the auditorium. Meyer flailed his arms, yelling as police tried to restrain him.

He was then pushed to the ground by six officers, at which point Meyer yelled, "What have I done? What I have I done? Get away from me. Get off of me! What did I do? ... Help me! Help."

Police threatened to user a Taser on Meyer if he did not "comply," but he continued to resist being handcuffed. He was then Tased, which prompted him to scream and writhe in pain on the floor of the auditorium.

After the incident, Capt. Jeff Holcomb of the UPD said Meyer had been charged with disrupting a public event and placed in the Alachua County Jail. Holcomb said there would be an investigation into whether the officers used force appropriately, adding that employing a Taser gun would only be justified in a case where there was a threat of physical harm to officers.

As Meyer was escorted away, he was followed by several students, including Matthew Howland, 20. Howland, a UF senior who said he didn't know Meyer, said he was "appalled" by the way UPD officers handled the situation. Howland acknowledged that Meyer had acted inappropriately by "rushing" the microphone and forcing a question on Kerry.

"It's a perfect example of when officers take something to a level that is not necessary," he said. "The officers escalated that situation."

Throughout the incident, Kerry urged the audience to "cool down" and acknowledged that Meyer had raised an important question. As officers escorted Meyer from the auditorium into the lobby, Kerry went on to explain that he did not think there was sufficient evidence of voter suppression to justify contesting the 2004 election.

"We just couldn't do it in good conscience because we didn't have that evidence," he said.

I'm pretty stunned too...but what was the point of him causing a scene like that? There's better ways to make a political statement

Well, they have the right to eject people from the building, and those police/guards, if they are registered, are allowed to use increasing levels of force, in the face of resisitance. The fact is, he received about a dozen warnings before they put their hands on him, and he was flailing around like a retard, physically fighting with them for full minutes. Taze the bitch. The fact is, tazers were invented because they cause fewer injuries than physically wrestling people all over the place. Unless you're an 80 year old man with a heart condition, being tazed is far safer.

That said, "Don't taze me, bro!" is a funny ass thing to say.

True, he was causing quite a stir from the get-go--I thought he was pretty obnoxious, but I don't think there's anything wrong with an opinionated person speaking up to a politician, asking questions that have probably been burning at the back of some americans' minds since the 2004 elections. Also from what I've read about the story from other news sites, the student tried to rush to the mic to talk but the cops weren't allowing him and it was actually John Kerry who insisted that he be allowed to speak! and then chaos ensued..

Sure, he was quite blunt (especially the comment about how Clinton was impeached for a blowjob lol) and he could've have said that more eloquently, but the main point is that he wasn't causing physical harm! He was only making a statement!

Also, I think I remember in the video where the guy said "Don't tase me, let me go and I'll walk right out of here" while he was pinned down. He wasn't much of a physical threat at that point...if they were going to tase him, why didn't they do it earlier when it seemed like one his flailing arms would actually hit somebody?

Look what I found on the net from the person who was videotaping:
"Couldn't get to my camera in time to record his entrance, but this guy basically comes running in with 4 or 5 cops in tow and says he has been running around trying to get in to ask a question and the cops are going to arrest him for it. they almost do it then but Sen. Kerry says he will answer it. he then answers a previous question someone else asked (i cut that part out because it isn't important to this video) then the guy asks his questions and when he is done all hell breaks lose. to the cop haters: i have no doubt the cops were going exactly by the book, the problem isn't them, its the book! they were doing their job and looked just as confused as this kid (this isn't something that they deal with often)

The forum was going to be over at 2 pm, and Kerry spoke for so long that the Q and A portion had to be shortened. He only got through about 7 of the 50 people who were waiting to ask questions. While the final question was being read, some douchebag ran down the aisle, grabbed the mic from the other side of the room, interrupted the kid who was talking, and started yelling at Kerry, demanding that his questions be heard. He started ranting about how Kerry talks in circles or something, and everyone was getting annoyed. The cops are all over him in no time and try to escort him out, but he starts yelling and resisting. Kerry insists that they let him stay and even agrees to answer his question.

After the interrupted guy's question was answered, Kerry keeps his promise and lets the angry guy talk. This is the point where people started taking their cameras and phones out. All the videos floating around youtube start around here. You can see in the videos that his questioning gets kind of inappropriate, so somebody cut his mic. Instead of shutting up, he starts yelling and making an even bigger scene. He struggled all the way up the aisle, and started violently trying to free himself. They threatened to taze him and he wouldn't stop fighting, so he got tazed. They only had to arrest him because he was causing a disruption and wouldn't leave peacefully. He wasn't being silenced for asking tough questions, trust me."

I watched some lippy drugy get stun gunned in the forehead after mouthing off the Transit cops and refusing to leave the property. He shut up for a couple minutes, stumbled off mumbling he was going to sue. I never seen anyone zapped before it was actually quite funny even more so because of where they hit him with it.

In this case the guy should have just left when they were trying to escort him out. I'm not saying the cops should have been taking him away but I think it's common knowledge if you resist it's not going to go good for you no matter if your right, wrong, guilty or innocent.

Yeah, the guy was being a douche. Maybe the tazer was a bit too much, but he received more than enough warnings to stop resisting arrest before they tazed him. It looks like he just wanted to cause a big stink, and he got exactly what was coming to him.

Seriously, even if I wasn't doing much wrong at the time, if cops came up to me and requested me to stop and leave, I'd do just that. I'm not gonna get my ass tazed and arrested just to make a point. Anybody who thinks this is a "Free speech" issue is delusional. The guy sounded hostile and aggressive to begin with, and from what I hear, the cops had an eye on him from the beginning anyway.
