Wisdom teeth - swelling?

Grr, one of my wisdom teeth has finally grown out and I have to get it extracted this weekend.
for those of you who have gotten them out, how painful was it afterwards? What are some tips to keep the swelling down? I'd hate to walk around with a lopsided chipmunk face for the week--i would like to keep that minimal.

    I got all 4 out at once, and I made them put me under. It doesn't hurt, but the bleeding can get annoying. Constant spitting. People are totally into seeing people spit blood on the street, heh.

    My boyfriend got them out 3 weeks ago and he couldn't eat for a full week = losing 10 lbs = horrible for guys.

    If you don't ice your jaw/cheeks once every hour the first few days, your cheeks will swell up ginormously.

    Then again... you're only taking one out right? My boyfriend got all 4 out at the same time, so in your case it probably wouldn't be as bad.

    Oh yea, don't eat rice or oatmeal. They get stuck in the hole / stiches. =S

    I was lucky when I got mine out. I did it in one shot- all 4 teeth. I took 1 tylenol3 and that was it. There was only a little bit of swelling, and people didn't notice unless I mentioned it. I wasn't in much pain. The thing that was gross for me was that food would get into the holes that the teeth left behind. I would have to use a syringe to rinse the holes out & I would see the food that got stuck in there.

    I was much the same, got put under and had all 4 out at the same time, little to no swelling at all. I was prescribed about 24 T3's of which i used maybe 2-3 total taking a half tab before bed first couple nights to sleep easier. But just because you are having them out does not mean you will swell like a chipmunk. Maybe locate some anti inflammatory drugs if you are worried.

    ps - to prevent the excessive bleeding (and theres lots) get a tea bag soak it in water and cram it right up against the hole from which it was extracted. Assists in blood clotting in the area.

    I had all four out too. My dentist caught it before they broke the surface though and that helps tremendously. If they catch it before they break the gum then they can close the hole back up and you don't have to worry (as much) about food getting in there.

    The pain sucks for a little while and the swelling is annoying, but it's not too bad.

    It didn't hurt too much...but I hated the taste of blood in my mouth

    It was pretty fine for me. I had all four out at once, no real bleeding after, no swelling, slight discomfort for a day and I couldn't eat solid foods easily for a week. I took at T3 and I was fine.
