About coursebooks in general...

edited August 2007 in General
I am a bit late in purchasing my coursebooks and need some advice ASAP~~

I want to buy books off other students through this forum but I'm not sure if it is okay to use older edition books...like the ISBN code is different and yea...not sure if there is a whole lot of difference? here are the books I need to purchase:

ECON 105: Macroeconomics by Hall & Lieberman (ISBN: 9780324421460)
ENGL 104W: Language In the News by Fowler (ISBN: 9780413014199)
Discovering the News by Schudson (ISBN: 9780465016662)
MATH 157: Calculus with Applications & Just In Time Alg & T by Lial & Greenwell & Ritchey (ISBN: 9780132078412)
PHIL XX1: Reason & Arugument (custom pub) 2nd edition by Feldman (ISBN: 9780536382337)

The MATH 157 book, someone at the bookstore told me that you don't really need the workbook? The ISBN for just the big book is 9780321228147. Also the book for the PHIL XX1 class I'm kind of confused because it says "required" for the custom pub version and "recommended" for the exact same title but not custom pub...does that mean it is recommended that I buy BOTH versions? =/

Thank in advance for advices to follow~ and if anyone has good deals on any of the books please leave me a msg =) or email me at floralnk@hotmail.com

Oh, and also are there any like CDs or some other material that is supposed to come with the books?

I usually don't buy my textbooks until the first week of school. This way, the professor will clarify all your questions concerning textbooks and the material you really need.

Ohh...so we don't really need the books right away? Does SFU have that thing where you don't "really" have classes in the first week? Because I heard that UBC has something like that...

Some profs take it easy the first week, but others bang right into the material. Upper level courses tend to be like the latter, I find.

With the courses that you are taking I think it is fine if you leave it until the first week of school to purchase your books. However, I know for certain that ECON 105 textbook doesn't change if you are taking it with Cox (which I think you are?).

yepp with Cox for ECON 105. My orientation leader told me today that I could actually e-mail the profs at this time to find out exactly what they want; hopefully that will work out well...thanks for the help you guys =)
