I love the quick learning curve that comes with a DSLR! I started out with film, then moved to slides, and now I'm using the 30D too. While my camera would ideally have a full-frame digital sensor, and the capability to hold slide film as well, I'm pretty happy with the digital situation!
I took tons of pictures in Thailand, didn't have to worry about x-rays getting at my film, or the heat ruining my slides.
Hey, it seems like alot of you folk are all about the 30D. As some one who doesn't have any product loyalty I really dont care what I use, it being Nikon Canon Minolta sony blah blah blah. But what is it about the 30D that you guys like? Like i said before I'm no pro but am happy with the D70s... in your opinion how do they stack up?
By looking at the specs there doesn't seem to be much different between the two.. some more automatic options come with the 30D, it also has a larger LCD screen, faster motor,and a higher pixel count. Other then that... i dont know...
You're right about the Canon/Nikon debate being mostly about product loyalty. I chose Canon because I remembered my mom having an old Canon SLR when I was a kid and it being a sturdy little workhorse (I think her camera was 3rd hand... and she still has it!)
Also, I felt that Nikon lenses were too expensive. When I switched my camera up to a better model, I stayed with Canon because I already knew the layout of the camera and enjoyed how it worked. Now, my boyfriend uses Canon, and so do most of my friends, so it makes sense that we can all share lenses, etc.
One definite downside is its harder to find used Canon lenses than it is to find Nikon ones, but I don't have a whole lot of money anyway!
Hey, I've got another question for you camera types. I am looking for a digital automatic to augment my SLR with (since the D-SLR is way to big and heavy to carry around with in any practical way).
I am looking for something that is small enough to go in my pocket but still have good picture quality. In the past I have had a Panisonic with the Leica lens and it was good. But is there better out there?
I prefer to buy cameras made by camera companies and not electronic companies. Electronic companies got in on it just to make $$, but camera companies have shown that they know what they are doing with their previous cameras!
I use an Olympus Stylus 720SW for my "pocket camera". I figured I'd get something to fill in wherever my DSLR cannot. This little thing is drop-proof (to 10ft), waterproof (to 10ft), small, big screen, 7.1 MP. It's my second Olympus digital point & shoot, and it's just what I need! We took it snorkeling in Thailand and I HAVE dropped it a couple times. Plus it's just a sturdy little thing!
Otherwise, I'd suggest Canon. They are consistently good!

Hey, I was shooting the Fireworks on Wednesday. Just like always I took sooo many pics, but only a couple of them turned out nice. Any tips to make my ratio of bad pictures to good pictures better?
I have an old Nikon Nikkormat FT body (entirely manual) that I shoot with (actually that reminds me that someone sent me another one of those).
I usually bulk roll B&W film, develop it and print it myself. I haven't taken the time to set up a darkroom since I moved to BC almost 8 years ago, but I have accumulated enough gear for about 2 darkrooms since I got here!
For me, it's all about the meditative and crafty aspect of the whole process. I have a 4 MegaPixel freebie Sony Quickshot for when I just need a quick snap of something.
...it's such an exceptional setting. that brand new Blusson Courtyard looks really neat for shooting too. Wow you guys are great, I didn't know such a photography community existed here.
Just thought I'd throw some of my stuff in as well. These were done with a D50 and 18-70 kit lens, in my 1st and 2nd years. Comment and critique welcome and appreciated. :)
