I use the rule 10% for ok service & 15-20% for excellent service. Now that you brought up tipping, what about hairdressers? I have no clue how much to tip them.
10% for OK-Casual type settings, 15% for exceptional service and if I enjoy the ambiance of a nice restaurant, min is 15%. but really, it's determined by service. I've tipped 30% before lol (i may have been a little intoxicated...)
i kind of have strict tipping guidelines for myself b/c I used to be a server haha
Sometimes I will notice other clients will put $$ on the hairdresser's desk for a tip. I think its because they do provide a service @ they are messing with your hair.
It totally depends on the quality of service, and the attitude of the server. If it seems like she is going out of her way to make sure everything is going well, then I am usually pretty generous with tips. Delays with my food don't bug me as much, because usually it is because the cooks are really backed up...somewhat out of the control of the server. I love it when the bill comes to something easy... like 36$ then you can just let em keep the change, its much easier that way :)
just as you tip anyone else.. if your pizza is say.. 14 bucks give them 16.. i had a pizza party at my house once.. ordered like 5-6 pizzas totalling a bill to abt 60ish i think.. and i gave him a 5 dollar tip for it.. =)
I seem to be in line with you guys where I would tip 10-15% for a casual restaurant and about 15-20% for a fancy one. But often when I go out with new people, they act like 10% is chincy. It makes me mad because I know 10% is common....am I right?
I tend not to get into percentages too much, it just looks odd if you have to calculate how much of a tip give. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of a tip...they used to be a way to show appreciation for good service, now its just an expectation :S 10-20% is a good guideline i guess but if someone doesn't serve me well I wouldn't tip much
I was eating at Charlie's Surf in White Rock and my fish was kinda gross and undercooked so I asked the waitress to get it fixed and get this, she says "thats just the way it is" I was like whoa can I get something else then, and she gives me this evil look. Anyways, I ate and left her a 5 cents tip so she'll be nicer next time :teeth:

Ha, ha. I've done that before. There was a waiter that would never check on us. He only took our food order & dropped our food off and that was it. He would walk by and look in our direction & avoided eye contact, like he didn't want to serve us. We kept having to ask the other waiters/waitresses for drinks, pepper, etc & obviously they were pissed that they kept doing this guys work. Anyways, there were 3 of us & we left our waiter a few pennies & a couple of silvers, place the bill on top of the $$ and ran out. Outside the restaurant, we saw the waiter pick up the bill & his eyes bugged out. It was so funny & we laughing our asses off. Maybe he should have given us service then.
hahaha.. here's mine.. i went to this japanese restaurant with my friends once.. the waiter was extremely rude!! when we ordered he gave us this.. pissed off look but we shook it off thinking he might've just woke up on the wrong side of the bed or sth.. next thing you know our food comes in and he just plops them down.. and may i add not gently too.. so while he was plopping down a dish with sauce he splattered it onto my friend's shirt and WALKS OFF!! like.. no apology at all!! we were pretty pissed then.. and things got worse when we had to ask him a few times just to take our orders.. so when the bill came.. we just paid the exact amount without any tips and left.. and while we were walking to our cars.. the manager came out with the bill telling us we didn't tip them.. and i told her.. "with this kind of service.. you don't deserve to be tipped" and walked off.. and as we drove out of the parking lot she still stood there looking at us.. shocked.. and damn that felt good.. X)
i agree with what Kevin said about the purpose of tipping.. and i usually tip because people tend to give good service anyway.. rarely had i need to resort to giving no tips or little at all.. and i also understand most waiters/waitresses only get an hourly pay.. some really could use the tips to make ends meet.. =)
I usually tip the delivery guy a couple of dollars, provided they didn't charge me a huge "delivery fee" already, and the guy got there in a reasonable amount of time.
As far as regular tipping goes, it's based directly on the service. It's not my fault if a server is working for minimum wage or less because they are dependent upon tips! If you need the tips to make a decent wage, provide decent service. In Thailand, you don't tip anyone and they don't expect it. The service is generally outstanding, too! This expected tip thing encourages people to just be lazy.
Working as a server has to be my last choice for a job. You get a lot of shit and not much money.
I used to work as a busperson (support for servers) in a couple of restaurants. It's hard work for them, so I know what they have to go through especially if they're busy.
For me, it's 10-20%, depending on service/class of restaurant.
don't tip at all, your actually doing them a favor by not tipping. No tips = wage increases!!! Just watch the beginning of the movie Reservoir Dogs, explains it all there!! lol

my real question is how do you tip delivery boys for pizza etc.

i dont see anything wrong with that
but under generall circumstances, always 10%
and like john said, if i've got dinner with a bitch i'll tip more haha.
but when the server is blatantly rude or just totally unprofessional, then by all means
