Transfering to UBC

edited November 2007 in General
Hi I wanted to transfer to UBC, not because I don't like SFU or anything but because I am moving there and my house will be closer to UBC than SFU, so I was wondering if anyone knows what the requirments for transfering to UBC sciences is, is there a website that I could visit and find out more???

I know that UBC takes all your classes into account, so if you've had to retake anything, it may be counted.

hey, i'm in the same situation as you are eba2. but i'm really not sure, i've gotten so used to sfu it kind of sucks to start all over again...but ubc will be so much closer...

anyway i think this is the website...

welcome to the club....i live closer to UBC than SFU, and dying to transfer out.

I heard that university to university has a lower requirement. I think it's because they just want to know if you will be able to survive in their school. Since SFU and UBC are probably ( I think ) teaching the same stuff, the grades requirement aint that high compare to high school and college

I've already applied to UBC Sciences..... I hope I can get admitted. I believe it's too late to apply now for the fall semester.. You have to wait until next semester to apply.

For second year transfer, it's 24 credits. 12 credits have to be in science.
You have to meet their English requirements which is either a score of 5 on the LPI or 6 credits of first year English.

You also need a GPA of 2.8 for first-year or 2.4 for second year.. well those GPAs were last years but it's roughly the same.

Here are some sites that really helped me with the application:

Here's the University/College transfer guide to UBC:
    http://www.students.ubc.ca/welcome/download/va_shift.pdf

    and...

here's the Requirements Site specifically for Sciences:
    http://www.escience.ubc.ca/academic/planning/requirements.htm

So ya, UBC only accepts applications for summer semester and fall semester..
But ya, best of luck when you do apply

    i gues i will see u there lol 2.4 gpa...what a joke...

    good luck to you guys!

i applied for Sauder, the minimum requirement is 2.4 GPA as well but they need me to send in a Bcom supplementary application. do any of you know what they would take more into account? how competitive is it to get into the program?

The only part about transferring to UBC from SFU is the fact that they calculate your gpa taking ALL your attempts into account whereas SFU calculates your gpa based on the best mark you received in a specific class. For example, if you took Calculus twice, SFU doesn't include the first attempt in your gpa. If you got a 50% the first time and a 80% the second time, UBC will take the average of that instead of the better mark. I hope that makes sense...thats the only reason I can't transfer to UBC because I have redone a lot of my classes so my gpa looks like shit to UBC even though its great at SFU.

and some of the classes, ie in engineering, are not transferrable

    Close...but not quite right.

UBC will calculate your admission based on the last 60 transferable credits attempted, not all of them.

In a case where you took a course twice within those 60 credits, both grades will be counted and for admission purposes, they will calculated as if they were seperate courses.

I'm not sure if it's different for transferring from college, but we were told that transferring from Langara meant that UBC would accept your last 60 credit hours, and consider the final 30 credits of those to determine your GPA.

Either way, I'd suggest making an appointment with an adviser! You'll want to be sure you're on the right track.

From Langara advisors? They're good story tellers, that's about it. Other than that, they're pretty much useless.

Nope, this is from a UBC adviser in the faculty of forestry. My boyfriend is transferring in from Langara next year.

Looks like you're right. They changed the general admissions criteria on me.

So just fluke good grades for one year and you're in eventhough you were a slacker the previous year

I applied for sauder as well, but i haven't done my bcom yet (put it off for 3 months =[, due in the 1st of may!)
    it's REALLY competitive, that's all i know.
You might not even get in with a 3.0, everyone tells me that. so i'm pretty much screwed.

Here's a big list of what you need.
    --I'm scared I won't get in, really.

UBC commerce requires more than a 3 gpa

haha yeah i've definitely heard the >3.0 GPA admission thing.
oh well, i just started doing my supplementary form last night. i hear they take into account of the extracurriculars that you do, so hopefully that may balance things out.

i wouldn't be scared about not getting in. you tried at least. it's not the end of the world. and i don't know why sauder is so competitive? they don't even compare to the business programs at Queen's, Western, Toronto, and McGill.
Funny thing is, a girl (and actually all her sisters and brothers went to my school as well) at my secondary school's grandfather is William Sauder--the man who donated $20 million to ubc commerce, and even all his grand-children headed off to McGill commerce. i wonder why, seriously i do...i wonder why??

I know people who got in without a 3.0 and those who have not with over a 3.0.

Simple tip, lie your ass off in the supplemental application. They won't check.
  • edited April 2007
but what if they check? lol
  • edited April 2007
the worst they can do is not accept you, right?
  • edited April 2007
they might put you in their "bad record".... its better not to do anything reckless
  • edited April 2007
What 'bad record'? Is this the same "permanent record" from elementary schoo;?
  • edited April 2007
If they check, it's probably as often as the ministry checks on student loan applications....1%

I've come to realize that other then Grad schools (med / law), UBC is the most overrated school that I've ever seen. It's just so ridiculous - 84% from high school for UBC Arts? Their Arts program is total shit, as is their Business...The requirements are way too high and it has nothing to do with academics, but logistics of local students wanting to attend and #s of Foreign students etc.
