Any Photographers?
Just wondering if there are any other photographers among us? I've had my camera for 4 years now, I've sold some photos and I've been paid to photograph children, families and maternity. I was hired as the photographer for a big Girl Guide camp in the summer (a few thousand people from around the world will be there!). My camera goes everywhere with me! I mostly like taking candid pictures of people on the street, but I'll photograph almost anything. Some of my pictures are here if you want to check them out.
My equipment:
- Canon 30D (only a few weeks old!)
- Canon Elan 7NE (film SLR)
- 28mm 2.8
- 50mm 1.8
- 50mm 2.8 Macro
- 85mm 2.8
- Olympus Stylus 720SW (digital point & shoot)

What camera do you have?
p.s. i love the picture you took of the pugs! so classic
And little digital cameras are getting really cheap now. It might be worth picking one up to keep in your pocket!
And I'll do what I can Bryan! It's a pretty big subject... but I can give you some pointers.
As far as buying an SLR, an intro-level camera will be a good choice. I'm a big fan of the Canon Rebel XTi (but if you find the XT for cheap, it's also very good). The lens that it comes with isn't great, but it will get you started. I wouldn't recommend buying another lens right away, until you get the hang of the camera and see what kind of photography you like doing (that will dictate which kind of lenses to buy) Generally spending about $1000 for the camera is completely fair. I'd stick with good brand cameras. I'm a Canon fan, but Nikon makes great cameras too and Pentax isn't bad but there aren't as many lenses.
On to photo editing. The major program of course is Photoshop. If you want to buy it, it's going to set you back about $500-$1000... so it isn't cheap! But it's easy to find free versions if you know where to look. if you are going to take up Photoshop I would recommend a book or a course... it's a HUGE program and it's very easy to get lost. I have a book called Photoshop for Photographers which addresses the things specific to what you'll need to edit photographs. If you don't want to go down the Photoshop road, there is a fantastic new program that Adobe is beta testing right now called Lightroom. I am AMAZED with this program. It lets you upload the photos, easily edit them for colour, tone, grain, cropping, etc., plus you can map any changes onto multiple photos, which saves you from editing the same thing over and over. It also helps to sort the photos as you can give them keywords and put them into groups. All changes that you make do not effect the actual image file which protects you from wrecking an image if you make a mistake (I do that ALL the time in Photoshop!). It really is an amazing program and it's FREE right now! There are tutorials available online too so you can figure it all out. But it's pretty straightforward.
Speaking about photography in general, the best thing you can do is take LOTS of pictures. Try photographing everything and be creative! The more photos you take, the better you get. And sharing your photos with others lets you get feedback and helps you to hone your skills. It's a really fun hobby!
I second Malakaiii's opinion on cameras. There are those who like canon, Nikon, pentax, etc. just gotta figure out which one works the best for the kind of photography you want to do.
And yeah, choice of camera brand definitely depends on what you want to be doing. Most photojournalists use Nikon because they are fast and reliable. I went with Canon because I knew I couldn't afford a bag of Nikon lenses! I'm extremely happy with my choice, though, and now I've converted a few of my friends...

this is inside one of many "tubes" running outside of the unconventional George Pompidou Centre.
what's interesting to me about this one is how conforming the structure and patterns are to each other in the tube, but the tube is meant to be a unconforming architectural design for the building itself...if you get what i mean...

and i guess this isnt REALLY photography, but i made a big poster for my friend for christmas with this thing i put together.

(i had to change them to links. the photos were too big!
Wow, Jimmy! You get amazing shots from the plane. It'd be worth getting a super nice camera to take up there with you. And the one with the rainbow is so cool!
And those are great, Meesh! I like your friend's eyes in the first one. What a neat colour. And the multiple circles in the second one makes for a really impressive shot.
Thanks for sharing!
thanks Malakaiii! yeah my friend has amazing eyes. when people talk to her, they feel entranced with her...sometimes when it's really bright out, her eyes change into this super light translucent blue/grey colour. it's unreal!
and the George Pompidou Centre is just a great place to take some photographs. have u ever been? you can get an amazing view of Paris as well!
i really have the urge to take photographs right now...but im too busy :(
i'm glad you enjoyed the photos though! :)
I finally got to get out last weekend and take some pictures! Unfortunately it was kind of a bust. I didn't take as many shots as I had wanted (felt uninspired) and of the ones I did get, most of them were pretty blahhh... I'm waiting for these winter blues to pass and maybe I'll get my creative drive back!
Here's the one good shot from the day:

Finally it is sunny again so I got out to take pictures of the cherry blossoms!
And more pictures of my cat cuz it's more interesting to take pictures of living things for me! This is Pixel. She has a problem with her eye and she's mostly blind in it. That's why it's all cloudy-ish.
i'm obsessed with my dog:
and random prof at Raven's cafe:
I love the last one of your dog it's like "Oh no, paparazzi!!" hehe But you are really good at pet portraits. :teeth:
i love that last photo of my dog too--had no idea he was making that face when i took it haha. i'm either good at pet portraits, or my dog is just born to be a model. either way, i'm glad you enjoyed them :)
Having just raved about the Nikon, if I were to do it again I would probubly go Canon. This is because after a couple years of shooting with the D70 i realised that even though the 3 frame per second motor is fast, its not fast enough and essentialy useless for fast action sequencing. I believe Canon has the fastest motor right now, but that camera is most likely close to a million dollars or something insane like that.
I took a TON of pictures in Thailand that I will be sorting through and posting over the next few weeks. I think some are pretty good! I hope so.

What do I shoot that needs faster then 3fps? Sports, like downhill skiing, downhill mountain biking... those two mostly. Most of the time the people are going so fast that using the motor only messes up the timing of the pictures. I am thinking now that I will have to go to full motion digital (aka video) with a really high resolution and then pull indavidual frames from that. (since video is running around 30fps, think that will be fast enough?)
(sorry about this one, I gave my camera to some one and they messed up the ISO, put it up to 1600, so its kinda noisy)
Ice-520... Love the crispness of your shots. What kit do you have? How long have you been taking pictures for?
And Konrad, I see why you need to have a fast fps on your camera! I don't photograph sports, so I often forget how handy it is to fire off a handful of shots and sort through them later. I really like the first one you posted of the cyclist on the wall. The blurry ramp in the right foreground makes it a unique shot!
