Speeding Ticket

edited February 2007 in General
Just wondering if anyone has had any success disputing a speeding ticket recently? I heard years ago that if you showed up for your court date and the cop didn't that you were off the hook. I believe they have patched up this loophole so my question is can you plea that you are a poor student to have the fine reduced? or are you just delaying the inevitable by disputing it and eventually end up paying? Anyone know anyone or had luck with this? Also heard a rumor that if you over pay the ticket they send you a refund say for 2-4 bucks or whatever you over sent for...then if you dont cash that cheque itll never count against you points wise? any myths or suggestions would be cool

The only way that you can dispute the ticket is if you actually have a good reason to dispute it. If you were speeding and they caught you, tough luck!

They certainly don't care if you are a student, and the myths are just that: "myths".

I agree that it's a large fine and really stinks when you are paying for school, rent, food, gas, etc. Hopefully it will encourage you to slow down?

you can dispute a ticket if the information written on there is incorrect.. ie: date.. time.. address.. licence number that type of thing.. so make sure everything is correct because if it isn't.. the ticket can be rendered useless..

Hey dude i've disputed plenty of tickets...first of all they take forever to finally give you a court date (by mail) so its a good way to delay paying... then you go to court and theres actually been a time when the police officer didnt show up so I pleaded not guilty and I was free to go (it was as easy as it sounds). Not only that but if the cop IS there and you know you are guilty, you can ask for a reduction in the fine which you will easily get on the grounds of being a student.

I had one that I agreed to pay in full as long as they didn't apply any points (which would have resulted in me losing my licence). So all in all, disputing is worth it if you can make the time to actually go to court for a morning
