what's course substitution?

on the music major checklist, it says "Please note that course substitutions are not normally permitted in
Extended Minor Programs."
and i have no idea what it means

    This is usually when you have done a certain course and it is very similar to the other course you have done extremely well in it and go to your student advisor to ask to substitute a course for another course/requirement. For instance you want to use a course that you've done in your major or minor and apply that to a course requirement needed in your Extended Minor Program, which is not normally permitted as it says.
